V. Vysotsky. From the song

Who carries our reactive century on their shoulders?

Modern worker!

From a song.

Since antiquity, the professions of artisans have been sacred.

I came to work at the Dimitrovgrad Automobile Aggregate Plant (DAAZ) in May 1985, and since then I have not changed my plant. Our DAAZ is a VAZ companion. We make parts for Zhiguli, Lad, Sputnikov, Kalin, etc. and not only for VAZ cars. From the personnel department, I was sent to the 33 workshop of automatic production, or as it was then called - the valve workshop. I got into the 221 brigade, which made the valves themselves - the main part. The brigade had 15 machines from the Swiss company "Tornos". 5 pairs of machines that made the so-called "heel" and five single machines that machine the so-called "chamber". A valve is a part through which tires of car wheels are inflated. Outwardly, it looks like a nail. The "nail head" - or in our professional jargon "heel" - is the part of the valve that is directly attached to the rubber of the tire, and the narrow opposite end of the valve in our language - the "chamber" - the place through which the air is pumped into the tire by the pump. There were 3 such brigades like ours, with the same machine tools in the Soviet Union. At ZIL in Moscow, at some factory in Kazan and here, in Dimitrovgrad. The machine, processing the "heel", performed turning, milling, drilling and threading operations, and after adjustment could produce 10 types of parts. But there was only one nomenclature. I saw how a technologist, fiddling with one of our machines, made the eleventh part. Allegorically speaking, we "shod" all the machines of the Soviet Union, and our products were still going abroad, including countries such as Germany, Japan and others. Capital countries bought our valves for gold, so we replenished the country's gold and foreign exchange reserves with our work. The valves were made of brass. Brass is very similar in appearance to gold. And the fact that the second part of the title of this article is associated with this noble metal is deeply symbolic. I repeat once again - brass is outwardly similar to gold, and by our labor, I’m not afraid to say, we mined gold for the country and made big politics. The brigade consisted of two shifts. Each shift has 10 submachine gunners. Five work on the "heel", five on the "camera" and 2 adjusters. One for one machine, the other for another. Well, of course, and masters. We, machine gunners, were jokingly called machine gunners. The work is very difficult, hard, dirty, and nervous. This is just one name that the machines are automatic (Auto means itself). There is a lot of manual labor. The machine itself is, as it were, the body, but the machine operator is his soul, psyche. Around the machines you have to spin a lot, twirl, run, jump, bend over. And not only at the machines. I worked on the heel. Sometimes on three machines. Everyone had to work. And head, and hands, and eyes, and feet. Once I brought a pedometer to work. With his help, I learned that I was running a shift for several kilometers. As Karl Marx said, and he was an excellent technician, there are no two identical motors. And here are the machines. Despite the fact that they are twins, each has its own temper and character. The part has been verified by 10 different peacemakers. The part has a complex geometry and strict quality requirements. If OTK inspectors find at least one defective part from a whole box, the whole box goes to the bulkhead. Vazovskaya system. It happened because of one detail, after the bulkhead of the box, later on it was no longer possible to find a single defective one. Sometimes, with great accuracy by sight, without conciliators, we determined this or that type of marriage, where the count went to tenths and hundredths of a millimeter. To become a mediocre machine gunner, you need to work at least a year. The submachine gunner has to keep in mind more than 50 operations for each machine. We, as pediatricians and veterinarians, must determine what is wrong and fix the problem. The machine is like a baby or an animal, does not say where it hurts. The machines are very complex, capricious, still far from perfect and not very well studied, and by that time morally and physically obsolete. But, in spite of this, we, excuse me, made sweets from feces - the best valve in the world. When foreigners come to our factory, they wonder how we make such masterpieces on such worn-out equipment? Each submachine gunner made 7 thousand parts per shift. Even more. But if the machines are running perfectly. But more often it doesn't. They often fail. It takes a long time until a locksmith or an electrician comes, or an adjuster fixes the malfunction. Any business takes time. One day my machine went out of business. A locksmith was needed. And the locksmith was not there that day. I go up to the foreman (who is also the adjuster):

Volodya, the machine is not working.

He is to blame for me:

Shura, well, work somehow.

The machine had some kind of serious, but not fatal, let's say, malfunction. It worked, but with a creak, slowly, barely. But things went on little by little. I remember the film "Lenin in October". The guard says to Lenin:

Vladimir Ilyich, all sorts of people come to you, go figure out what's on their minds. How will I protect you?

Lenin answers him:

Guard it somehow.

So we also often worked somehow. But it went on.

Once we together with the foreman prevented the stoppage of the VAZ conveyor. A helicopter flew in from the VAZ. It was our parts that were missing. It was Saturday. The plant is closed on Saturday in the second shift. I and the foreman, who is also for the submachine gunner, stayed for several hours overtime, made several necessary missing boxes. I am on the "heel", the foreman is on the "camera". The helicopter took the parts to Togliatti on the same Saturday.

In our work, we need to take into account a lot of various small details, after neglecting which, problems begin. "There are frequent complications where simplifications are frequent." All kinds of emergencies and devilry happen to us. And also you have to solve all sorts of puzzles. I even had to work with a stick. Yes, with the most ordinary stick. The electric switch went out. The machines have stopped, the switch is located above the machines. You can't reach it with your hand. I had to hit the switch tongue with a stick to turn it on. And so he passed out several times during the shift. Floods and fires occurred several times. We will come to work in the morning, there are puddles around the machines. It rained at night, and the roof was full of holes. Or another case. Karshik accidentally hit a pipe with a fork, from which water gushed out. Sometimes, for no reason, no reason, the machines suddenly flashed. There were also electric shocks. As Edita Piekha sings, oh, what was not with us. So we were all extreme sportsmen. Once, someone stole a motor from one of the machines. I don’t understand how the thieves managed to steal such a weight and transport it outside the factory. You never cease to be amazed at the ingenuity of the thieves. And once there was an anecdotal incident. One guy from our shift took a week off. Here's what happened. He wished for a neighbor's wife. But their husband caught them. The husband was not alone. With friends, they cleaned his face. The man did not go to work for a week until the insignia left his face. This colleague of ours, having come to work, told us this story and asked for forgiveness from us, having previously told his superiors about it. The shop management said: "If the brigade will forgive, we do not mind." We forgave him. Indeed, as Shakespeare said: Love is an exception. It's funny, but not funny.

Extreme heat in summer. In addition to the sun, the air in the workshop is also heated from the machine tools. The saturation plant has a long queue. People faint. In winter, the shop, on the contrary, is doggy cold. Hands are often in abrasions, scratches, splinters. And not just hands. Fingers were often cuts and pinched. But we didn't count it as an injury. There is dirt under the nails, which is very difficult to wash off. Hair and robes are constantly in oil. Nervous. Each time we overestimated the plan, and very often we had to work at night and two shifts in a row, contrary to the Labor Code. But the plan was driven off. When, after two shifts in a row, the second and third, returning home (and then Ikarus were still walking), I fell asleep right on the bus. We were like lemons after work. One of my drawer neighbors in the dressing room, who works in a nearby brigade across the aisle making valve caps, told me once that he once had to work a day. 3 shifts in a row. Without knowing it, we did big politics with our work. Again, our valves were sold abroad for gold. They were in great demand. Therefore, we were overestimated. This means that our country received more gold. What is the economy of the state, so is politics. Yes, the work was very hard, not everyone could stand it. But we were paid well. In those Soviet Gorbachev times, I personally had 270 rubles a month. This is despite the fact that I often stayed the night shift for a day off. I had to travel a lot around the country, but the administrative ones did not give me permission, only with detention. Some guys from our brigade nailed for 300. Sometimes even under 400. But this money had to be earned. They won't pay that kind of money for anything. We had the highest wage rate in the shop. But, despite this, there is a very high turnover of staff. Our foremen even earned more than foremen from other teams. Until the beginning of the 90s, when the workshop ceased to exist, for the last 5 years in our team, our shift alone, 7 foremen were replaced. And what about the workers?

In our shift there were 2 communists (one secretary of the party organization of the shop), both adjusters and several Komsomol members, the brigade was international. Russians, Tatars, Mordvinians, Chuvashs, Azerbaijanis, Georgians, Jews, and even a gypsy with an earring in his ear, who served in the army, a Komsomol member and at the same time had drives to the police, worked in it. The guys had the following names: Gorbachev, Bagirov, Kogan, Lyubimov, Lezhnin.

I'll explain. In those perestroika times, Bagirov was the first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Azerbaijan. I don’t remember the name. Leonid Kogan is a great violinist, People's Artist of the USSR, Lenin Prize laureate, professor. And also - Pavel Kogan, poet, author of the famous song "Brigantine". Yuri Lyubimov is the chief director of the Taganka Theater, the most avant-garde theater in the country. Lezhnin (I do not remember his name), Honored Artist of the RSFSR, Ulyanovsk. He was the only one in our region that the KGB allowed to paint pictures about Lenin. Naturally, we were their namesakes. Our team was a model of the plant and of our entire country. An alcoholic, a drug addict, a policeman, a repeat offender (murderer), a mentally ill person, and a genius worked in the brigade. Everything was mixed and mixed in one heap. People of various professions. Tractor driver, accountant, musician, mechanic, as I said, a policeman, miner, etc. Two even with higher education plowed at the machines. And the geography was vast. One from Vorkuta (beyond the Arctic Circle), one from Kronstadt, one from the Kuban, one from Azerbaijan, one from the Caucasus, one from Kazakhstan (from Baikonur), one from Siberia, one from the Far East. During my work in the brigade, several people got married, including me. We even had our own blue beard. One has even been married 4 times. In 1989, my wife and I went on a free trip to Yalta. There my wife and I got to a concert of the popular singer Mikhail Muromov. In the hall, our couple also sat next to one married couple. My wife's chair was next to that young woman's chair with a small child sitting on her lap. The girls started talking, and I heard out of the corner of my ear that the husband of that woman was a miner of Donbass and that he earned 180 rubles. Nearby sat the wife of a submachine gunner and the wife of a miner. I remembered the famous song about the miners by Vladimir Vysotsky "Black Gold". I would like to end this article with the revised lines of this song about my profession of a submachine gunner with explanations. Not entirely accurate and poetic, but grotesque. The song "Black Gold" begins with the words:

Not space - meters of soil above me,

And in the mine there is no time for holiday processions,

But we also own the extraterrestrial -

And the most earthly profession.

My version:

Not space - the roof of the workshop is over me,

And in the workshop there is no time for holiday processions,

But we also own a factory -

And the most automatic of the professions.

Vladimir Vysotsky:

Any of us - well, why not a magician?

From the underworld upward coal with a sword.

We'll take fuel away from the devils -

They will have nothing to heat their boilers with!

Alexander Lezhnin:

Any of us, both a magician and wit,

From the inside of the machines, we sword into the box.

We will take the gold from the gods -

They will have nothing to give their gifts!

Grotesque. It is not the gods who burn the pots, and Jesus Christ was also a worker.

Gold details are the same color,

Capital countries take from us for gold.

We drag metal to take their moment

Their pockets will be empty.

Capital countries pay for our products in gold.

Vysotsky:

Yes, we ourselves are like devils in the dust.

We tear apart the womb of Mother Earth,

But on earth it is warmer and safer.

Yes, we ourselves, both in oil and in mud.

But our train will not leave empty.

We make cars with ointment

With which it is faster and more reliable.

Here are the trolleys, merry soul,

They rush like a chase movie.

And the joke "Give coal to the country!"

LAN:
Machine tools rattle, clank, for steel

They rumble like in a chase movie.

And the joke "Give the country a detail!"

We feel on our own palms.

But we dig deeper: hunger is insatiable.

We forget when rummaging in anthracite.

Yes, we are in the big darling,

But we can hardly hide our hunger.

Sometimes digging into your own soul

We forget when doing details.

Blown up, stacked, chipped

Black reliable gold.

Made, tested, folded

Reliable yellow gold.

Our products are a safe investment. Detail - yellow - gold.

Yes, a miner is a difficult profession. In terms of professional mortality, they are in the first place. But they work for 6 hours, and we often work at 16. And they earned from 180 rubles, and we 300. The question is: who has a cooler job?

P.S. My mother was a teacher. I never told her about my work. We all went to school, we know what kind of work teachers have. Sometimes teachers even end up in a psychiatrist. So, she asked me: “How do you work there? I couldn’t stand it for two hours. ”

The interest of young people in this area is not accidental: any activity, one way or another related to programming, portends today great opportunities for professional growth and development.

However, the competition among applicants for this position remains rather low: 3.6 CVs per vacancy. Which is not surprising either: the set of knowledge and skills required for such work is very substantial. An automation engineer must know the production process perfectly, understand the equipment, be able to correctly program the required algorithm.

At the same time, the process of automation of production implies the need to visit the enterprise often, and this is associated with business trips, for which not all graduates of the departments of automation are ready. In addition, there is always an alternative: to go to IT. A technical mindset and programming skills are an excellent background for development in information technology, and salaries in this industry traditionally attract the views of young professionals. And the lack of qualified personnel forces IT companies to attract professionals from related fields.

However, there are those who cannot be lured into another sphere by any conditions. Let's see what the job of automation engineers is.
