In everyday life, each person has many times found himself in a situation where it is required to provide a set of photographs for various documents.

Today we will learn how to take a passport photo in Photoshop. We will do this in order to save time rather than money, since we still have to print the photos. We will create a blank that can be written to a USB flash drive and taken to a photo studio, or printed independently.

Let's get started.

Official passport photo requirements:

1. Size: 35x45 mm.
2. Color or black and white.
3. Head size - at least 80% of the total photo size.
4. The distance from the top edge of the photo to the head is 5 mm (4 - 6).
5. The background is solid white or light gray.

This will be enough for us for the lesson.

There is one flaw in my picture - the eyes are too shaded.

Create a copy of the original layer ( CTRL + J) and apply an adjustment layer "Curves".

Bend the curve to the left and upward until the required lightening is achieved.

Create a new document with dimensions 35x45 mm and resolution 300 dpi.

Then we line it with guides. Turn on the rulers with a keyboard shortcut CTRL + R, right-click on the ruler and select millimeters as units of measurement.

Now left-click on the ruler and, without releasing it, drag the guideline. The first will be in 4 - 6 mm from the top edge.

The next guide, according to calculations (head size - 80%) will be approximately 32-36 mm from the first. Hence, 34 + 5 \u003d 39 mm.

It will not be superfluous to mark the middle of the photo vertically.

Go to the menu "View" and enable binding.

Then drag the vertical guide (from the left ruler) until it “sticks” to the middle of the canvas.

Go to the tab with the snapshot and merge the curves layer and the underlying layer. Just right-click on the layer and select the item "Combine with Previous".

Detach the tab with the snapshot from the work area (take it by the tab and drag it down).

Then select the tool "Move" and drag the image onto our new document. The top layer (on the document with the image) must be activated.

Place the tab back into the tabs area.

Go to the newly created document and continue working.

Press the keyboard shortcut CTRL + T and adjust the layer to fit the dimensions limited by the guides. Don't forget to hold down SHIFT to keep the proportions.

Set - International paper format;
Size - A6;
The resolution is 300 ppi.

Go to the picture you just edited and click CTRL + A.

Unpin the tab again, take the tool "Move" and drag the selection onto a new document (which is A6).

Attach the tab back, go to document A6 and move the layer with the image to the corner of the canvas, leaving a gap for the cut.

Then go to the menu "View" and include "Auxiliary elements" and "Smart Guides".

The finished picture must be duplicated. Being on the layer with the photo, pinch ALT and pull down or to the right. In this case, the tool must be activated. "Move".

How to take passport photographs?

You cannot be photographed for documents in a headdress, sunglasses, retouch the photo, smile. The photo should be taken strictly in front view, and the background color should be several tones lighter than the skin color.

Photo size for Ukrainian or Russian passports 35 by 45 mm, Belarusian - 45 by 50 mm. Photo for Russian and Ukrainian international passports - 36 by 47 mm (the picture must be taken at least six months ago). Photo size on military ID - 30 by 40 mm.

The distance from the top of the head to the top edge of the picture is 4–6 mm, the thickness of the printing paper is no more than 0.3 mm. It is better to take a photo in daylight or highlight it with a flash, but remember that there should not be deep shadows or uneven lighting in the picture. The distance from the camera to the subject should not be less than 2m and not more than 5m. The person should sit upright and the camera should be at eye level. It is better to take several pictures in order to select the best quality for printing. After selection, you can go directly to preparing a photo and printing it.

1. Align the background of the photo. To do this, open the photo in Photoshop and click Image -\u003e Adjustments -\u003e Curves. Next, using the eyedropper, select the darkest place in the background, click OK and continue working. To work with guides and navigate with the size, you need to display a ruler in the working window - click View -\u003e Rulers.

3. Now click View -\u003e New Guide and create two horizontal guides, set the Position value to 50 and 62 mm. The distance between them is 12 mm - so much is the distance between the chin and the line of the eyes. Then press Ctrl + A, then Ctrl + T - select the whole image and go to transformation. Holding Shift, we begin to reduce the photo, moving it around the corner.

4. Next, raise the guide to the very top of the head, and the second guide 5 mm higher - now we have the upper border of the photo. Now with the Crop tool create an area of \u200b\u200b35 x 45 mm. Now you need to move the image so that the top of the photo coincides with the top guide and press Enter.

Now you need to place photos on the sheet from which the printing will take place. Create a new document with a size of 100 x 150 mm and a resolution of 300 dpi, and then using a simple copy, place the required number of photos on the sheet. Now you just need to save the resulting layout and feel free to send it to print.

Why go to a photo studio?

You can independently prepare a photo for a photo for documents or visa. Some visa centers, including a photo for a Russian passport, accept files in electronic form. Photos are optional. Open up our photo in Photoshop and start preparing the position of the face relative to the guides on the document.

We increase the size of the photo and, along the guides, first rebuild the face so that the bridge of the nose was divided into two almost equal parts - This is a sign of the exact location of the photo in the center. We don't pay attention to the shoulders yet.

Replace the background on the photo with documents

When we have decided on the location of the head and its ratio according to the requirements, moving on to replacing the background... You can change the background as you like. I have my own methodology and that is what I follow in this case.

I don't need a white background. In my requirements, I talked about a gray background. Change the background to gray.

Photo processing for documents. Retouch and sharpness.

Next, especially for preparing a portrait of a girl, we need to perform retouching. The complexity of retouching on photo documents is that it would be as invisible as possible. Why? Photo retouching for documents is generally prohibited by requirements. Why? It is believed that non-professional retouching can change facial features, therefore a person will not look like and may be refused a visa. But this is with regard to visa and passport. Photo requirements for documents or personal files in institutes and other institutions may not indicate this. Roughly speaking, the format of 3x4 photos for documents at the institute - photoshop is not prohibited.

I did retouching and even face plastic surgery in countries such as the USA, France, Germany, etc., where the rules are very strict. And there was not more than one time when a photo was returned under the item on photo processing. I just do retouching very carefully and carefully.

Of course, if you cannot spend your time studying a graphics program and getting into technical problems, then you should turn to the professionals. Generally such processing of a photo for documents takes 5-10 minutes. Sometimes it can take about 20-30 minutes depending on the source and the client's wishes.
