To begin with, dear readers, let's define the goals of our lesson. So, we must define what a personal letter is and how it differs from a business letter, study its structure, and most importantly, learn how to write a letter to a friend in English using ready-made templates.

People use letters as a way to exchange information around the world. Letters can be written to friends, relatives, acquaintances or people with whom we do not know much, for example, business partners. It is from the one to whom your letter is addressed that its belonging to business or personal correspondence depends, and the form, structure and style of writing your letter depends on its affiliation. You could familiarize yourself with the rules for writing business letters in our previous article letter in English, and now we will get acquainted with the features of writing personal letters in English.

So, friendly or personal letters, as a rule, are addressed to people with whom you personally know (friends, relatives, loved ones). The language of writing such letters may have a colloquial colloquial character. For example, pronouns of the 1st and 2nd person (I, you) are very often used. It is not excluded the use of dialect words, slang words, exclamations, interjections, vernacular, modal verbs, affectionate forms, etc. In personal letters, you can freely express your opinion, that is, a subjective assessment of any situation is not prohibited. Personal letters can be highly emotional. As you can see, friendly correspondence does not have such strict stylistic restrictions as business.

As for the structure of a personal letter in English, in form it practically does not differ from a business letter, just some points can be neglected at your discretion. You can familiarize yourself with the structure of the letter in the article “Learning to write letters in English correctly”. If you have to write a personal letter to a friend in English, for example, in an exam, then of course the form of the letter cannot be neglected.

Step-by-step letter structure with template phrases

So, a personal letter to a friend in English must necessarily include 5 points according to all the rules:

The first item is the "header" of the letter, i.e. the sender's address and date. (Heading: address and date)
The address is written in the upper right corner and has the following sequence: the house number with the name of the street, the apartment number separated by a comma. The next line indicates the city with postal code, the next line is the country. Do not put commas or dots.

46 Riverview Park
New York 542,210
USA
February 15th, 2008

On the next line or every other line, the date is written immediately below the address. Several spellings are possible:

May 12, 2014
May 12th, 2014
May 12, 2014
May 12th, 2014

The 2nd point is "appeal". (salutation or greeting) The appeal is written on a new line on the left. A comma is usually placed after the conversion.
Very often, the appeal begins with the word Dear + the name of the person you are writing to.

Dear Rima, Dear Karan
Dear Daddy, Dear Mammy
Dear Uncle Ray
Dear Mr. Green

Various options are possible. It all depends on who you are writing to.

My dear Jim

Have you been traveling? — Did you travel?
I am preparing for entrance exams to the university. I am preparing for the university entrance exams.
We are going to travel to Turkey. We are going to go to Turkey.

The fifth paragraph is the closing sentence, where you bring your message to a conclusion and can wish you success, ask for something, or express hope for something. You can also write that you are in a hurry somewhere or you have to go somewhere.

Anyway, I must go and get on with my work. “Anyway, I have to go to work.

Write back to me soon. - Answer as soon as possible.
Let me know what happens. - Let me know what's going on.
I hope this advice is of some help to you. I hope my advice will be helpful to you.

The 4th point is the final polite phrase (subscription / closing). A comma must be placed after the final phrase.

best wishes,
All the best

The 5th final point is your signature. You put your signature on the next line under the final phrase without a dot.

Hi Sophie,
I'm writing this from the cutest little café in New York! Mum's been making sure we don't miss one sight in the whole city, so we've been walking practically all day. So far we've seen Times Square, Broadway, Central Park and The Plaza. I caught a glimpse of the Statue of Liberty but we're going to go and see it properly tomorrow!
The streets are super busy here and everyone looks amazing in their winter coats and hats. I had to buy mittens today! I miss being able to feel my fingers!
Hope you're enjoying your holidays.
Miss you times a million, see you back in Adelaide on the 20th!

love,
Ashley

PS: I'm bringing you back a souvenir!

One of the tasks in the exam in English is writing a personal letter in response to a letter from an "English-speaking pen-friend". Writing a letter in a foreign language is a simple task that must be completed as quickly as possible in order to leave time for other tasks. So, consider the uniform rules for writing a personal letter.

This manual is relevant for USE, but it can also be used OGE taking into account the fact that:
● at the Unified State Examination they are asked to ask 3 questions, but not at the Unified State Examination;
● the volume of writing for the USE is 100-140 words, and for the USE 100-120.

In the upper right corner enter the address in the following order:
house number, street name
city
the country

It is allowed to indicate the address in a short form, for example:
Moscow
Russia

Under the address skipping a line, you must write the date of the letter:
June 4th, 2019
June 4, 2019

or less formally:
04/06/19

The letter begins with an informal address. If the name of your interlocutor is not indicated in the task, it should be invented:
Dear Tim,
Dear Rebecca,

A comma must be placed after the appeal!

Divide the text of the letter into several logical paragraphs, each of which start with a red line.
1. In the first paragraph, you should thank your friend for his letter:
Thanks (a lot) for your (last) letter.
Your last letter was a real surprise.
I was glad to get your letter.
It was great to hear from you! / It was great to hear that… / I was happy to hear…

You can also apologize for not writing earlier:
Sorry I haven’t been written for so long but …/ Sorry I haven’t been in touch for so long.
I"m sorry I haven"t answered earlier but I was really busy with my school.

and / or mention any fact from the received letter:
I'm glad you passed your History test!
Sounds like you had a great time in London!
Great news about your…!

2. The body of the letter (2-3 paragraphs). In it, you must disclose all the aspects indicated in the assignment. Don't forget to ask the necessary questions.
The letter is supposed to be written in an informal style, so you can use informal linking words such as well, by the way, anyway, so, colloquial expressions like Guess what? Or Wish me luck! as well as exclamation marks.

3. The last paragraph should explain why you are ending the letter:
Well, I'd better go now as I have to do my homework.
Anyway, I have to go now because my Mum asked me to help her with the washing up.
I've got to go now! It's time for my favorite TV show.

and mention further contacts:
Write (back) soon!
Take care and keep in touch!
Drop me a letter when you can.
Hope to hear from you soon.
I can't wait to hear from you!

At the end of the letter on a separate line the final cliche phrase is indicated, which depends on the proximity of the author and the addressee. It is always followed by a comma! Below are the possible options from the least formal (1) to the more formal (7):
1) Love,
2) Lots of love,
3) All my love,
4) All the best,
5) Best wishes,
6) With best wishes,
7) Yours,

On the next line, under the final phrase, the author's name is indicated (without a surname!). For example:
Andy or Kate

Thus, a letter to a friend looks like this:

We even had a stomachache and consulted a doctor. However, all the excursions were extremely interesting. We visited the Vatican and were impressed by the famous St. Peter's Cathedral. I also enjoyed the Colosseum and other sights of Rome. All in all, we enjoyed our holiday.
And what about you? What are your plans for the summer? Will you come to visit us? Russia is a unique country and I'll show you lots of interesting things. If you make up your mind, let me know what cities you would like to visit.
Hope to hear from you soon.

In this case I try to talk to them and find the way out. Unfortunately, I can meet my friends only at weekends and we usually play football together. It's our favorite game.
And how do you get on with your sister? Do you play together? Do you help her with her homework? I wish I had a sister or a brother!
Anyway, keep smiling whatever happens! I'd better go now as I've got loads of homework to do (as always).

Thanks for your letter. I'm glad you liked the postcard I sent you!
In your letter you asked me about my attitude to soaps. Well, I agree that soaps don't show life realistically because their plots are rather unbelievable and all emotions are exaggerated. As for me, I prefer whodunits, which keep me in suspense till the very end. I usually watch films at home but I never miss a chance to go to the cinema with friends. It's much more exciting to watch films together.
I miss you much! Write back soon and tell me all your latest news. How is your sister? Has she passed her driving test? And what about your mother? Has she got over the flu?

I agree with you that English grammar is rather difficult so I think it’s necessary to learn grammar rules and to do exercises. As for me, I do it on a regular basis.
Going to a language school together is a great idea! We could practice our English and visit lots of places of interest. I'm absolutely free this summer so I can go whenever you like.
Write and tell me what dates suit you best. Which course would you like to do? What level do you think we are? Where would you prefer to stay? Meanwhile, I'll make some enquiries about language schools in the UK. I'll get in touch soon. I hope it all works out!
lots of love,
Helen

This is part of a letter from Adam, your English pen-friend, whom you're going to visit in summer.

...As for me, I'm crazy about skateboarding and I love rock and pop music. I think my favorite band at the moment is Radiohead. Do you know them? What kind of things do you like doing and what music do you enjoy?
Is there anything you particularly want to do while you're here? / guess you'll be busy at the language school during the day, but we can do something in the evenings and at weekends. Also, let me know if there are any kinds of food you don't like...

Write back to Adam.
In your letter
answer his questions
ask 3 questions about his family and the language school

Dear Adam,
Thanks for your letter. It was great to hear from you. I can't wait to meet you and your parents in July!
Well, we've obviously got a lot in common. I'm also crazy about rock music and my favorite band is Radiohead, too! I've never done skateboarding, though, but I'd love to try. I enjoy basketball and I love playing computer games. Do you?
I'm a bit worried about the language school. Is it far from your house? Should I bring any books with me? Will I have to do much homework? If I have, I'm afraid I'll be busy in the evenings. Actually, I wouldn't mind any activity. It will be fun just to be in another country.
Anyway, I know we're going to be really good friends. Please write back soon.
All the best
Sasha

It will be very useful to write a letter template before taking the exams, according to which you will complete the task on the exam.
In our selection of materials, in addition to many useful materials, you can find 31 completed letter, as well as template for writing a letter:
Materials in English (USE)
Materials in English (OGE)

Dear colleagues, it remains for us to discuss the last task of the OGE exam - a personal letter. It prepares us for an almost similar writing assignment for the USE.

general information

In the last section of the written part of the exam, the student must answer a letter that he received from a friend, preferably in 30 minutes, and the maximum for a correctly written letter can be grabbed 10 points.

The task is not difficult. If you write a letter a week during the school year, by the end of the 9th grade, it will not be difficult for the average student to write a personal letter for 8-9 points, because this task, like speaking, requires practice and practicing clichés.

How to write a letter

I offer students the following scheme for writing a personal letter:

Actually, it remains only to learn this form and answer ALL three questions asked in the letter. And also do not forget that you need to use abbreviations in the letter and keep within 100-120 words.

By the way, about word count criteria. All words are counted, from the first word to the last, including auxiliary verbs, prepositions, articles, particles. In a personal letter, the address, date (the date in the format 20/08/2017 counts as one word), and the signature are also counted. Wherein:

 contracted (short) forms can’t, didn’t, isn’t, I’m, etc. are counted as one word;

 numerals, expressed in numbers, i.e. 1, 25, 2009, 126 204 etc. count as one word;

- numerals, expressed in numbers, together with symbol percent, i.e. 25%, 100%, etc. are counted as one word;

 numerals expressed in words are considered as words;

 compound words such as good-looking, well-bred, English-speaking, twenty-five are counted as one word;

 abbreviations, for example USA, e-mail, TV, CD-rom, are considered as one word;

- words spelled incorrectly, for example, without the hyphen well bread, will be counted as 2 words, and written by wellbread as one (i.e., the count is based on the fact of writing).

What about vocabulary and grammar? The letter must be well-formed and contain thematic words. You can show a detailed knowledge of grammar by doing it all year and honing it in the process of writing letters.

I can say the same about vocabulary. Teach, use in conversation and writing so that the student can use it in the exam.

And the last piece of advice: if you are not sure about the spelling of a word or a grammatical structure - do not write, it is better to write simply, but correctly.

You have 30 minutes to do this task.

You have received a letter from your English-speaking pen friend, Ben.

… I am very busy now preparing for my exams but yesterday I went to the cinema with my friends. We saw a new film about Sherlock Holmes. You've probably seen it too. … What kinds of films do you like? Where do you prefer watching films – in the cinema or at home and why? What would you make a film about if you had a chance?…

Write him a letter and answer his 3 questions. Write 100–120 words. Remember the rules of letter writing.

Thank you for your recent letter. I was so glad to hear from you again.

As for your questions, I have seen the film about Sherlock Holmes too. You know, I'm fond of detective stories, that's why I went to the cinema to watch it. I enjoy watching the films in the cinema with my friends because watching films together is much more exciting. Besides, I like the atmosphere at the cinema. If I had a chance, I would make a film about animals because I love them and want to share my feelings with others.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Attention! When you rewrite your answer on the exam sheet, do not forget to write the task number at the beginning - Task 33. Organize your time so that during the exam you have time to rewrite the entire written task on the form. A draft letter is not checked.

LETTER PLAN IN THE OGE IN ENGLISH

The letter to the OGE should be clearly structured and include the following mandatory components:

  1. The address
  2. date of
  3. Appeal
  4. Thanks for the letter received
  5. Apologies for not replying sooner and the reason for that.
  6. Connecting phrase
  7. Answers to a friend's questions
  8. Polite completion of the letter and an indication of the reason why we finish writing the letter
  9. Link to future contacts
  10. Closing Phrase
  11. Signature (Name)

Let's analyze these components of writing in the OGE in English 2018 in more detail.

SAMPLE OF WRITING THE ADDRESS IN THE OGE IN ENGLISH

In the upper right corner we indicate the address (it can be short)

Moscow

Russia

If you write a full address, do not forget about the principle "from smallest to largest", namely:

  • house number, street name
  • city
  • the country

ENGLISH DATE SAMPLE

Under the address, skipping the line, indicate the date of the letter in one of the formats:

  • May 5th 2018
  • May 4, 2018
  • 04/05/17

Remember that the dates May 5th 2017 and 4 May 2017 each contain 3 words, while 04/05/17 counts as one word.

TEMPLATE OF APPEAL IN THE LETTER OF OGE

It consists of only two words: Dear + friend's name (Dear Tom,) . Be sure to put a comma after the call! Don't bet, you'll lose a point.

SAMPLE EXPRESSION OF GRATITUDE IN A LETTER
IN ENGLISH OGE

  • Thanks (a lot) for your (last) letter.
  • I was glad to get your letter.
  • It was great to hear from you!

EXAMPLES OF APOLOGIES IN A LETTER IN ENGLISH

Then you need to apologize for not answering earlier and explain the reason:

  • Sorry I haven't answered earlier but I was really busy with my school.
  • Sorry I haven't written earlier but…
  • Sorry I haven't been in touch for so long for so long but…

Connecting phrase

Here you can mention any fact from the received letter ( I'm glad you passed your Physics test!) or write a generic phrase: either I'm glad you're OK! (if the friend is doing well), or I miss you much! (if we learn from a friend's letter that, for example, he broke his leg and is in the hospital).

ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS IN THE LETTER OF THE OGE 2018

There are three points to remember here:

a) How many questions, so many answers. For example, a friend asked:What extreme sports would you like to try, if any, and why?So, it is necessary not only to write I'd like to try rafting , but also to argue:because it implies a well coordinated team work, good reaction and nerves of steel;

b) we observe the grammatical structure of questions and answers. If a friend asks What would you do if you were me? it is necessary that the answer contains a construction If I were you, I would… (do thesame);

c) It is not necessary to answer the questions in the order in which they are asked. The main thing is that they are logically connected.

POLITE COMPLETION OF A LETTER TO THE OGE IN ENGLISH

Explain why we end the letter:

  • Well, I'd better go now as I have to do my homework
  • Anyway, I have to go now: my Mum asked me to help her with our dinner
  • Actually, I've got to go now! It's time for my favorite TV show

LINK TO FUTURE CONTACTS IN THE OGE LETTER

We write that we will be glad to receive a letter from this friend again:

  • Write (back) soon!
  • Take care and keep in touch!
  • Can't wait to hear from you!

SAMPLE CLOSING PHRASE
IN LETTER IN ENGLISH

At the end of the letter, on a separate line, the final phrase is indicated:

  • love,
  • lots of love,
  • best wishes,

It is always followed by a comma! Don't bet, you'll lose a point.

SIGNATURE IN THE LETTER OF THE OGE (NAME)

On the last line, under the final phrase, we indicate our name without a surname and dots! ( Vlad, Ann)

USEFUL TIPS FOR WRITING A LETTER
OGE IN ENGLISH CLASS 9

  • Count the words.

Be sure to meet the given volume: 100-120 words is the golden mean, but a deviation of 10% in both directions is allowed, i.e. 90-132 words. If there are ≤89 words in the letter, then 0 points are given for the task. If ≥155 words, then only the first 132 words are checked. This means that one extra word can lose a few points! Remember that 1 word is everything between two spaces. Hyphens (-), apostrophes ('), and slashes (/) are not spaces, so that's, twenty-two, open-minded, UK, TV, and a date in the format 05/05/17 are counted as one word. Practice writing OGE letters in grade 9 on exam forms - this way you will learn to determine the number of words by eye and spend less time counting them.

  • Write in an informal style.

Bring your letter to life with abbreviations ( I'm, can't, I'd like ), informal linking words (well, also, by the way, anyway, so, actually), colloquial expressions ( Guess what? Wish me luck!) and interjections (Hurray! Yahoo! Ha-ha!).

  • Correctly calculate the time.

Give yourself 30 minutes to complete this task: 15 minutes for a draft, 10 minutes for a clean copy, and 5 minutes for word count and proofreading. Be sure to check the letter before submitting!

Believe in yourself, and writing a letter to the OGE in English 2018 will not be difficult. Good luck!

Dear Ben,

Yesterday I received your letter. Thanks for it. How's it going?

Guess what! Recently I've also seen some series about Sherlock Holmes on TV. To tell the truth, I am really keen on detectives and never miss a chance to watch a new one.

As for me, I prefer going to the cinema because it is fun to put on goggles and watch films on a wide screen with perfect sound and 3D effects. If I had a chance, I would make a short documentary film about the place where I live.

I am looking forward to hearing from you. Drop me a line when you can.

best wishes,

Valeria

Option 2

Voronezh

Dear Ben,

Thank you for your letter. Please, forgive my tardy reply but I was busy cramming for my Chemistry test.

You know, last month I enjoyed watching Benedict Cumberbatch who starred as Sherlock Holmes in the series “Sherlock”. I really like this film but my passion is action movies. And if I had a chance, I would make a picture about Agent 007.

As for me, I'm not much of a cinema-goer that's why I prefer watching films at home. Moreover, I find it cheaper and more convenient because you can save your money and time.

Well, I have to go now to walk my dog.

Keep in touch.

best wishes,

Victor

Dear Tom,

Thanks for your letter. Sorry I haven't answered earlier but I was busy with my school project. Hope you didn't have accidents while hiking!

As for me, I don't have much time on active holidays because I have a lot of homework. My family is more the stay-at-home sort, so I can't spend the time with them somehow actively. My company is my friend and, you know, our trips are usually very jolly. I’d like to try rafting this spring, because it implies a well coordinated team work, good reaction and nerves of steel.

I'd better go now as my Dad wants me to help him with his car. Write soon!
