Gelendzhik in the era of ancient Rome

In the 1st century BC, the Black Sea coast from modern Crimea to Sukhumi came under the influence of the Roman Empire. During this period, the Roman port-fortress of Pagra was built on the territory of modern Gelendzhik. This is evidenced by weapons and coins with images of Roman emperors dating back to this period found in the vicinity of Gelendzhik. The influence of Rome in this region continued until the end of the 4th century AD.

During the megalithic expedition of the Institute of Archeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Moscow), on the territory of the resort of Gelendzhik, a Roman military tower from the time of the emperor Nero (54-68) was discovered.

The tower was located in the vicinity of the resort village of Arkhipo-Osipovka. This tower provided control and observation of the coastal strip and the sea from Cape Chugovkopas (Betta) to Cape Agriya (Nebug), and in clear weather, Cape Kadosh (Tuapse) was visible from it.

Archaeological expeditions of A.A. Malyshev - RAS (Moscow) discovered similar Roman towers in the Novorossiysk region. The main task of the garrisons of the towers was to promptly notify the Roman army with light or smoke signals about the approach of the enemy.

These facts served as the basis for the idea of creating a historical interactive show-park "Roman Empire" in Gelendzhik.

The park has been open for several years, but only during the holiday season.

Roman Empire in Gelendzhik (amusement park, review)

The Roman Empire Is a family park. That is, it will be interesting not only for children, but also for adults. The organizers of the park position it as a "show park", because whole interactive performances are arranged on the territory of the park ("interactive" in this case means that the audience takes part in them). This summer, my children and I decided to check if the Park is really so good and if we like it.

We got to the Park by our own car, but you can get there by a free bus or taxi (I described how to do this at the end of the article). We parked the car and went back in time - to the Roman Empire.

The journey to the Roman Empire begins with the Roman military fort, where, together with the centurion and legionaries, visitors to the park will have to recruit a new recruit to serve in the Roman army and train him in military affairs (something like an introductory briefing takes place here, where they tell who, where and why in the Roman army).

Then, in the village of barbarians, you will have the opportunity to meet local craftsmen and mold something not very complicated from clay (the result depends on the age of the child).

For adults and children who are fond of shooting, a Roman military shooting range awaits. Here, of course, such modern "tricks" as the Pulsar Trail XP50 thermal imaging sight will not be useful, but you will get great pleasure from shooting, because you will have the opportunity to learn how to shoot from the "Scorpion", "Gastrofet" and a bow, no worse. than a Roman soldier.

Well, all the shooting weapons of the Roman troops can also be seen in a small "museum":

Further, the possessions of the slave owners and the School of Gladiators begin. A huge training machine with rotating posts, an obstacle course, a wooden doll and other gladiator simulators will test your preparation (if you so desire). The children were delighted with the opportunity to swing swords.

If you've learned how to fight, then it's time to go to the real Roman Arena and become a spectator of unforgettable fights.

Well, after that you can go to the Roman market, where merchants offer guests various souvenirs and weapons.

Those who have worked up an appetite are expected in the tavern, where you can taste the real "Gladiator's Lunch" - barley porridge with beef and fried vegetables and other delicious dishes.

A small video that I filmed while “traveling” through the Roman Empire with my children:

I almost forgot the story about another "Roman" attraction - the watchdog "dragon" (you can stroke it and even pick it up):

Enjoy your stay in Gelendzhik!
