From September 14, 2015 all applicants for a Schengen visa are required to submit biometric data, which includes 10 fingerprints and a photograph.
Biometric data will be stored in the visa information system(VIS), which is an information technology system that allows the Schengen member states to exchange visa data.
The main task of VIS is to simplify visa processing and control at external borders, as well as to improve security.

The collection of biometric data begins on September 14, 2015 at the visa centers where the applicant needs to PERSONALLY suitable for initial fingerprinting. Subsequent visa applications within 59 months may be submitted without the applicant's personal appearance.

The applicant can also apply through accredited travel agencies,
but every 59 months, he must personally come to the visa application center to submit his fingerprints.

It must also be borne in mind that in case the fingerprints are not found in the VIS system for some reason, REQUIRED personal appearance of the applicant at the visa center.

The applicant has the right to undergo a fingerprinting procedure with each submission of documents for a visa. This is recommended for a number of reasons:

To prevent delay in processing documents if the applicant's fingerprints are not found in the VIS system
- for security purposes - to verify the authenticity of the identity
- if the applicant does not remember when the fingerprints were last taken, or if there is doubt whether the fingerprints were taken earlier

The collection of biometric data does not apply to children under the age of 12, or if fingerprinting is not physically possible.

If the visa application is submitted before September 14, 2015, the visa issued under it will be valid for the entire period of validity without submitting biometric data.
