Sports are reaching for mega. Decathlon opens its first free-standing store in Parnassus Decathlon at mega Parnassus when opening

On March 3, the French chain Decathlon is opening its first own hypermarket of sporting goods in St. Petersburg. By the end of 2020, 4 more similar projects should appear in the city.

The hypermarket was built next to the Mega Parnas complex. On an area of 4.8 thousand square meters, goods for more than 70 sports will be presented, more than 90% will be Decathlon’s own brands.

The construction of a free-standing hypermarket took 3.5 years, from the purchase of the site to preparation for the opening. The project cost the network more than 500 million rubles, says its director Ivan Snegur.

In the next 5 years, until the end of 2022, the company plans to open 11 more stores in St. Petersburg. At least 4 of them are hypermarkets, which Decathlon will build on its own land plots, says Ivan Snegur. The cost of these projects can be tentatively estimated at 2 billion rubles.

In Russia the company is also developing dynamically. By 2025, the number of stores in Russia is planned to be increased to 120, says Yulia Goroshchenya, director of the company’s development department.

The hypermarket on Parnas is the fifth store of the chain in St. Petersburg. The first of them opened in the Leto shopping center on Pulkovskoye Shosse in 2009. Over the past 2 years, two more supermarkets and a hypermarket in the Okhta Mall shopping center have appeared in the Northern capital.

The French chain Decathlon is a large chain of sporting goods hypermarkets. The company is owned by the Mulier family, which also owns the Auchan and Leroy Merlin brands. The Decathlon chain has more than 1,200 stores around the world, from Canada to Australia. To date, the company has opened 54 stores in Russia.

The Decathlon hypermarket with a total area of 4800 sq.m is located on an area of 3 hectares. The company invested over 500 million rubles in the construction and launch of the project. In the next two years, the networker plans to build four more such hypermarkets in St. Petersburg, and by the end of 2022 there will already be 11 of them. So far, there are four Decathlon stores in the city.

“By implementing development projects from scratch on our sites, we use the facility as efficiently as possible, we are planning the concept of a retail space with the possibility of expansion in the future,” Yulia Goroshchenya, director of the development department of Decathlon Russia, told Business Petersburg. Thus, Decathlon on Parnassus has areas where you can test a product before purchasing, for example, play table tennis, ball, archery, etc. Near the store there are public sports grounds for football and basketball.

Experts were skeptical about the idea of developing sports hypermarkets in free-standing buildings. They find it more effective to place them in shopping malls, along with other “anchors”, for example, a grocery store and a home goods hypermarket.

The company prefers to locate stores in residential areas. “We do not avoid shopping complexes in the city center, the fact is that we have not yet found retail space there that meets our criteria,” says Yulia Goroschenya. According to her, the company is constantly faced with a shortage of suitable land plots, this is especially true for Moscow and St. Petersburg - priority regions for the development of Decathlon.

Better unite

Decathlon, along with the Sportmaster Group of Companies and the Adidas Group of Companies, is one of the three leaders in the Russian market of retail sports networks in terms of revenue. According to a study by NeoAnalytics, in 2016 the size of the sporting goods market grew by 6.3%, to 255 billion rubles. According to data, the turnover of Octoblu LLC (representing Decathlon in Russia) in 2015 amounted to 13.9 billion rubles. In St. Petersburg, the leader is Sportmaster, which has 25 stores; Trial-Sport (operates a chain of six stores) and Planet Sport (six stores) also operate in the city. “Decathlon’s decision to build its own stores is logical and, most likely, caused by the fact that existing shopping complexes cannot provide premises suitable for the chain in scale,” says Sergei Fedorov, general director of Terra Incognita. However, he points out that a sporting goods store is usually adjacent to other anchor tenants, such as grocery stores: “Will a free-standing sporting goods store be able to attract customers, especially since MEGA, where Sportmaster operates, is located nearby? I don’t sure".
