About Us. DIY Boat Projects Privacy Policy

This comfortable and seaworthy boat can be built with water-resistant plywood, boards or steel. Six people can travel on it, which will accommodate in three cabins. The boat is also convenient for weekend tourism, when the ship becomes a floating cottage that will take its crew to a favorite vacation spot ...

The proposed equipment option - typical for boats with a length of 8.5-9.5 m - provides sufficient comfort on board for a group of 6 people. on a long journey along inland waterways. The details of the equipment and the quality of their execution depend on the ingenuity and skill of the builder, as well as on the quality of the materials at his disposal ...

Despite the fact that Argo is shorter than Progress or Kazanka-MD, it has a closed cabin with two permanent berths, in which four people are freely accommodated at the table. On the move in the cockpit on the folding seats are the driver and one passenger; two more passengers can sit on the lid of the aft locker. Thus, in the cockpit there are places for all four crew members. The cockpit is protected from splashes by a developed windshield...

Everything was exactly like that. A huge number of projects were viewed. The main area of my family's planned voyages is the Oka, with access to the Volga and its reservoirs. Let me remind you that the Oka River is rather shallow, with numerous shallows and sand bars. Consequently, it was necessary to combine relatively high seaworthiness and minimum draft. Keel options and even mini-yachts-compromises have disappeared, as well as all “mini” options with a length of less than 5–5.5 m.

It became clear that a dinghy was needed, but it was not possible to find a suitable dinghy either, because there was also a limitation on the length of the hull: in the room I had, it was possible to lay a vessel no longer than 5.7 m.

In the end, I decided to take as a basis the sharp-chinned plywood yacht compromise “Corsair”, the sketches and data of which were given in issue. 1, and a description of the built version and comments on its project by the famous designer A. Karpov - in No. 83.

Since A. Karpov also recommended turning the Corsair into a shallow-draft clean dinghy, I did just that. Along the way, he somewhat modernized the appearance of the yacht - reduced the sheer, changed the shape of the stem, and also gave the transom an inclination (along the line of extension of the backstay), which at the same time simplified the maintenance of the outboard motor.

From the very beginning, I abandoned the “high” cabin in the middle of the yacht in favor of the option with a “forecastle”. This greatly simplifies the construction and maintenance of tightness, only slightly affecting the comfort of the interior.

The main dimensions and contours remained the same (with the exception of the cheekbone in the bow of the hull). The hull is built according to the traditional technology with plywood sheathing (FSF brand) on a pine set, except for the centerboard well, in the construction of which oak and bakelized plywood are used.

On the bottom, the skin thickness is 10 mm, the transom lining and cockpit flooring have the same thickness; sides, deck and bulkheads - 6 mm. When assembling the hull (keel up) on a transverse set set on a slipway along the shergen-planks, a keel and bilge stringers assembled from two parts, as well as other longitudinal ties, are installed on stainless fasteners.

After the set is shredded, sheathing sheets are installed on it, which are joined together in place on the lining strips. Sheathing is pre-impregnated with two layers of epoxy resin, and the finished body is pasted over with two to four layers of fiberglass. The inner surfaces are impregnated with drying oil and painted.

The well is glued inside with two layers of fiberglass. After gluing, the outer surface of the body must be leveled with epoxy putty and sanded until the fabric structure of the gluing disappears. It is better to paint the finished hull with special paints for fiberglass, including antifouling (the last layers are below the waterline).

The tilting daggerboard is made of glued laths with a lead weight (according to the project of the daggerboard for the “Shrimp” - see No. 38). The hinged steering wheel is made in the same way from rails and covered with fiberglass (its drawing is in the same place in No. 38, as are the sketches of the main fittings).

To simplify the work on armament, I did not do the spin of the staysail, I went along the path of expanding the set of staysails (besides the main one, there are sails of a smaller area - by 6 and 35 m2 and a storm sail by 2.5 m2). A bulwark appeared in the cockpit and a railing along the entire length of the sides.

The sailing equipment has undergone some changes, as the yacht was built mainly for travel. Top-end armament with a collapsed mast shortened to 6 m was used. The entire spar is made of aluminum pipes: the mast is 70 mm in diameter, the boom is 60 mm.

The mast is placed on the deck on a step with a powerful cushion between the beams on the sp. 2 and 3. The general arrangement and equipment of the yacht are clear from the illustrative material. Of course, each of the builders will decide this issue based on their capabilities and tastes.

I remember the statement of the builder of “Laguna” (“KiYa” No. 183–185) that it is not at all necessary to equip a sailboat for shallow inland routes as an autonomous vessel, because land is always nearby.

It seems to us that a family cruiser should be equipped for sailing “with a break” from the shore, that is, it should have a galley, berths, and a toilet (it doesn’t exist yet). We installed the tiles (on a hanger) on the port side next to the table and kitchen cabinets.

"Nord" was launched at the end of July 2004 and has already been tested in navigation on the Oka. Rolling showed good positive stability. In the next navigation, the driving performance was tested on the Gorky reservoir, we sailed in a fresh wind and on a wave up to 1.5 m high.

The yacht obeys the helm well, is centered enough, easily rises on the wave, the cockpit remains dry. In light winds, it is not inferior in speed and steepness to T2-type sailing dinghies and, in part, even “Micro”. But in strong winds it begins to heel strongly, so you have to reduce the windage; the low weight of the boat and the lack of ballast (~ 150 kg of lead under the floorboards) affect.

Of the shortcomings, one should recognize the small width of the stern of the boat, which leads to its overload when there are three people in the cockpit; one crew member has to be sent to the forepeak or tank (in the given table of ordinates, the aft part of the hull has already been made wider by 250 mm).

There is also a somewhat greater windage of the hull, but this is a natural payment for normal living conditions in the cabin. The wooden centerboard constantly swells and gets stuck in the centerboard well. Otherwise, the yacht turned out, and you can walk on it.

Three people is the optimal crew on a long voyage. The outboard motor “Veterok-8” is somewhat heavy and is used at half power. The best would be a 4–4.5 hp motor, but for now I put the “Salute”: against the current on the Oka, it rakes out regularly. That's all I wanted to report about another modernization of the Corsair project.
