Action camera sj4000 wifi. The most complete review and test of the SJCAM SJ4000 WiFi action camera. Design, technical characteristics

Gone are the days when there was only one manufacturer in the video equipment market for extreme recreation. Action cameras quickly found their fans, so it is not surprising that many manufacturers are interested in this market segment. For the end user, this was a real gift, because healthy competition always leads to improved functionality and a significant reduction in the market price.

The focus of this article is the SJ4000 SJCAM WiFi extreme recreation camera. Characteristics, review and feedback from the owners will acquaint the reader with a wonderful product created by Chinese craftsmen. A potential buyer will get acquainted not only with the original device, but also with a fake, which is very common on the domestic market and slightly different from the certified product.

Market features

It should be noted right away that there are two modifications of the action camera on sale, which, having the same marking, differ significantly in price. The fact is that there is an original version of the SJCAM SJ4000 WiFi product, the price of which is within 7,000 rubles, and there is also a fake that costs about three thousand rubles. In fact, these are two different devices, since there are significant differences between them both in quality and in functionality.

Both options for action cameras are in demand among potential buyers, and the point here is not at all the price. In their reviews, many owners assure others that the non-original modification is more advanced in terms of functionality, albeit in terms of security damage. But first things first.

First meeting

It is quite difficult to please potential buyers, especially when it comes to packaging. So, fans of the Hero GoPro gadget complained that there were too many mounts in the box, which many remained unclaimed. But as soon as the Xiaomi Yi camera appeared on the market without a mounting tool, users attacked the manufacturer with accusations.

The Chinese manufacturer did not disappoint future owners and provided all the necessary accessories for shooting. For SJCAM SJ4000 WiFi, this is a nice addition, since the installation kit, including the underwater box, costs more than one thousand rubles. Accordingly, the user has a chance to save a lot.

Original packaging

In a nondescript at first glance box, in addition to the camera itself, the owner will find a lot of interesting things: a charger, a small manual and a large assortment of various fasteners. A plastic box for underwater shooting, clamps, mounts, straps - everything for the convenience of working in extreme conditions.

Confuses only in the complete set of the device SJCAM SJ4000 WiFi instruction. It is written in Chinese. Yes, the manual has color pictures and all kinds of diagrams, having studied which, you can easily perform the necessary actions, but the lack of translation raises many questions. The fact is that in the US market, action cameras are supplied with manuals in English, so why should the Russian market be provided with Chinese instructions?

No one calls for purchasing non-original products on the domestic market, but it’s still worth getting acquainted with the package. In the box, the owner will find the same mounts that are present in the original version. The manufacturer did not save on this, providing the user with a full range of accessories for SJCAM SJ4000 WiFi. Fakes are also supplied with an additional battery, which pleases all buyers.

There are modifications with memory cards with a capacity of 32 gigabytes - this is also considered a pleasant gift from the manufacturer. But with the instructions, the Chinese are failing Russian-speaking users here, which looks very strange from the outside.

Build quality of a certified device

The original SJCAM SJ4000 WiFi looks like a solid plastic brick, which does not have any assembly defects. Without a magnifying glass, even the joints of the faces cannot be detected, and this really pleases all users, judging by their reviews. You can find fault with the battery compartment, which is much larger than the battery. The charge, of course, is not lost when shaking, but the rattling itself is a concern.

But accessories can cause dissatisfaction with the owner. For example, the charger is a pulse charger and during operation it seems that it is about to crumble. Plastic fasteners are also embarrassing - it is not easy to break them, but when deformed they emit strange squeaks. Only the plastic box for underwater shooting is made soundly and does not cause negativity.

Camera Specifications

Reviewing the SJCAM SJ4000 WiFi camera, I would like to note the excellent functionality of the installed components. The 12-megapixel Aptina AR0330 1/3" CMOS sensor is equipped with a (F = 2.8) 170-degree field of view. Such indicators already guarantee excellent quality shooting in low light.

But the exposure mode let us down a bit - ISO within 100-400 units looks very poor. At least you can forget about night shooting forever. The 1.5-inch liquid crystal display also looks very strange, but its presence causes positive emotions among users.

As for the shooting itself, there are no questions here: a customizable self-timer, continuous shooting, the ability to change the resolution - everything is like in a digital camera from an expensive class. Even autofocus can detect faces and does a great job with a large number of objects in the frame.

Working with video

Most buyers are interested in the video shooting capabilities of the SJCAM SJ4000 WiFi device. The performance of the camera is respected even by demanding users. Video can be shot in three modes:

  • Full HD (1920 x 1080 dpi), 30 fps.
  • HD (1280 x 720 dpi) with a choice of recording speeds of 30 or 60 FPS.
  • Easy (848 x 480) at 60 fps.

It is worth noting that these indicators are quite enough for most types of shooting. Yes, there is a negative in the reviews regarding the lack of a 120 FPS mode, as implemented by competitors, but there are not so many videos in the media with such characteristics. Users prefer to shoot in good resolution at the expense of speed. And you can’t forget about saving space on a removable drive, because the higher the recording speed and resolution, the more footage takes up space.

Device functionality

It is not for nothing that the action camera has the symbols "WiFi" in its marking. This is a clear hint that the device has a built-in wireless module. Naturally, the owner has many opportunities that are definitely worth talking about. It is better to start with which you can customize at your own discretion. Some users prefer to turn on the camera on their own when moving, while other owners use the device as a surveillance camera.

The footage can not only be recorded on removable media, but also transferred to a mobile device via Wi-Fi. The present USB and HDMI connectors on the body of the device perfectly complement the functionality of the camera. When connected to a computer, the gadget turns into a WEB-camera, and a TV connected via HDMI becomes a full-fledged monitor for a miniature device. In general, the manufacturer guessed with the functionality of the device - many useful functions open up new opportunities for the owner to use the action camera.

When it comes to quality

Having studied the technical characteristics of the device, many users imagine the unsurpassed quality of shooting with such interesting equipment. Imagine their disappointment when, on the very first day of video recording, oddities in the operation of the SJCAM SJ4000 WiFi are discovered. 1080p (FullHD) format looks unnatural on a huge TV screen. Moreover, under different lighting, the color gamut of the image completely changes. Photographing is also subject to the same problem, regardless of the selected resolution.

It's all the fault of the colors, which in automatic mode tries to give the image natural halftones. In fact, this is a factory defect that was ignored by the manufacturer. Manual mode will help fix the problem - the user must select the desired lighting in the camera settings (day, cloudy, incandescent lamp). Included with the device is a special cloth for wiping the lens. In their reviews, many users recommend using it constantly, eliminating contamination of the optical device.

Not stopping there

The problem with the quality of shooting can be eliminated by the firmware of the original SJCAM SJ4000 WiFi device. Feedback from the owners, present in the media, recommends that all users, without exception, get to know the possibilities of updating the software closer. The fact is that the firmware produced by the manufacturer is a real constructor - the owner can assemble the modules he needs and upload them to the device in the form of a standard firmware.

The range of modules is large. Every day, users create and post on the forums new solutions for owners of action cameras. Thus, many enthusiasts have expanded the camera's capabilities in working with white balance - additional settings are available in the menu (tungsten, twilight, and similar types of lighting). Thanks to the programmers, the problem with the range of Wi-Fi was solved - the signal strength increased significantly (albeit in proportion to the battery consumption).

Manual revision of the video camera

It doesn't happen that everything is good. The original SJCAM SJ4000 WiFi camera has microphone sensitivity issues. Needless to say, in underwater boxing, it does not work at all as it should. The problem is known, and many users will find out about its elimination even before buying an action camera. True, to upgrade the microphone, the owner will have to completely disassemble the miniature device.

Enthusiasts suggest taking the built-in sound sensor outside, providing it with a directional mechanism. From the outside, it looks more like a plastic tube that covers the microphone with one end on the chip, and the other end is displayed on the front of the device. Yes, you will need to drill a hole in the lid. To prevent moisture from entering the tube, the hole must be closed with plexiglass, which is easily glued to the plastic case.

Removing the protective cover is easy, but getting to the controller itself is problematic. Chasing compactness, the Chinese fit in a small box of circuits mixed with cables and loops. Therefore, it is better to accompany the entire disassembly process with photography, otherwise it will be problematic to assemble the device.

Problems and solutions

One of the reasons why users choose to purchase a non-genuine version of the SJ4000 SJCAM WiFi camera is the lack of support for large memory cards. The original device has a 32 GB limit. Today, this is a very small amount. But a fake, in addition to a spare battery, makes a gift to the user in the form of a modern card reader that supports 128 Gb microSD memory cards.

Only many potential buyers overlook the possibility of flashing the original action camera. Enthusiasts have long found a solution to this problem. By installing the necessary module in the firmware, you can make the device work with 64 gigabyte drives. Yes, this is two times less than that of a fake, but also 2 times more than the factory version of a certified device. There is a possibility that the manufacturer himself will fix the problem by releasing a new firmware, because this is a mistake not at the hardware level, but at the software level.

The Pursuit of Happyness

There is no need to think that the non-original SJ4000 SJCAM WiFi camera does not have any problems. In the media, users often discuss the solution to the problem of liquid crystal peeling in the body of a miniature device. Apparently, the problem is not in the quality of the assembly, but in the component itself, which is responsible for displaying the image. It is possible to fix the problem with improvised means, but this will be a temporary solution, since the air that has got inside the matrix will continue to exfoliate the screen.

And you can leave everything as it is. After all, in fact, the image on the screen does not disappear, but only the color rendition changes and the brightness worsens. For setting up the device, the quality is quite acceptable. You should not count on a screen replacement under warranty, since the manufacturer of non-original products is not certified in the CIS countries.

The approaching holiday season calls for a return to choosing the best option for a miniature camera with which to capture action events. And not just action. Someone will need the ability of such a camera to function as a car recorder, for example. But one of the most important conditions, given today's realities, is, of course, the low cost of the device. Fortunately, the current choice is not limited to one or two brands, which, as a rule, indefinitely “lift up” the price tag (however, most often this is done quite reasonably). In addition to big names, on the shelves, primarily on the Internet, it is not difficult to find lesser-known brands.

Design, technical characteristics

Outwardly, these two devices almost do not differ from each other, however, the cameras that will be discussed in the article are completely different devices. Different not only in cost, but also in characteristics, which we will now see.

The completeness of the cameras under consideration varies, but only slightly.

Here it is, the SJ5000X kit. I must say, quite heterogeneous, designed for almost all cases of action-life. The only pity is that there is no suction cup mount for placing the camera on the windshield of the car. But the camera - more precisely, both cameras in question - is quite capable of replacing the DVR, which will be discussed below.

Taking a closer look at the cameras, a few differences are easy to spot: the LED indicators on the front of the SJ5000's camera and the slightly larger dimensions compared to the SJ4000.

But the set of interfaces and their location are exactly the same for both cameras: the left side of the case and the standard Micro-USB, Micro-HDMI and a slot for a microSD/SDHC/SDXC memory card.

However, a comparison of the back side of the case again indicates significant differences. The main one is the diagonal of the built-in displays. As you can see, the SJ4000 is equipped with a much smaller diagonal display than the SJ5000, which makes it difficult to assess the parameters and composition of the frame. Accordingly, the font on such a microscreen looks much smaller.

Finally, another difference: the number of control buttons. The SJ5000 has a dedicated button that activates the built-in wireless network adapter. The two remaining arrow buttons can be used in the SJ5000 to both navigate the service menu and control the electronic zoom.

Both cameras are powered by the same 900 mAh internal form factor batteries.

However, because the cameras record at different frame sizes, the battery drains at different rates:

During long video recording, the bodies of both cameras are heated to the same temperature of 43 degrees, no failures due to overheating were detected. Although, if the camera is in the box and the shooting is carried out in hot weather, then overheating can be expected.

The main technical characteristics of the cameras are shown in the following table:

Articles with reviews of video or cameras do not attempt to make a feature, view or action film, as some readers would like. The purpose of each purely technical article is to talk about the operational properties of the device, to show, if possible, how camera settings or shooting conditions can affect the nature and quality of the resulting video, and also to get acquainted with the original videos shot in fixed conditions for later comparison with shooting by others. devices.

You can visualize the difference in detail and nature of the picture that the recording modes available in both cameras give, using the following still pictures and original videos.

Say, shooting again in cloudy weather? Not at all. By constantly monitoring the situation in the heavenly office, it was possible to snatch some half an hour of relatively clear weather and conduct this survey. However, looking at the resulting picture, one cannot believe in the presence of the sun, albeit hanging low. Although, on the other hand, the shadows that are here and there on the snowy surface prove that the weather was still clear (for the Russian winter, of course). What's the matter here? Apparently, these are the features of the automation of both cameras, which builds the white balance and exposure parameters at its discretion. And this discretion, as you can see, is quite peculiar, and even enhanced by no less peculiar color reproduction - a cold picture in the SJ4000 and a warm picture in the SJ5000. Preliminary conclusion: before any shooting, it is desirable to adjust all parameters manually.

It would seem that now you can choose the optimal shooting mode for each device. With the first camera, SJ4000, everything is simple - only 1920 × 1080 30p, other recording options seem of little use due to the obvious presence of aliasing in the frame, the aliasing of oblique contrast objects, which usually appears due to inaccurate software scaling or when addressing information from the matrix (skipping lines, or colander effect). By the way, it is about the second option - skipping lines - that the moire that occurs when artificial regular structures enter the frame (we will see it later). Okay, we have dealt with the SJ4000. But with the older sister, SJ5000, you have to wait. The fact is that 4K in this camera is “fake”. That is, the true frame size is not the prescribed 3840x2160, but some strange 2880x2160. At the same time, in the service fields of each file, the camera records an aspect equal to 16:9, which is necessary for the players or editing programs to correctly display the frame. By the way, the developer does not hide this fact at all, warning about the non-standard frame size, here is a quote from the official website:

Please notice the 4K resolution is interpolated, the real resolution is 2880×2160P, thanks.

In addition to the studied factors that may affect the quality of the picture, there is another one - the viewing angle. In action cameras, it does not change by optical means - the optics are firmly glued here, there are no moving parts in action cameras. Changing the viewing angle in such cameras can be done either by changing the scanned area of the matrix (address reading) with subsequent scaling of the resulting frame to the required size, or by primitive cropping of the resulting image, again with subsequent software scaling. It is impossible to say unequivocally which of the options is better or worse - it all depends on the number of pixels on the matrix, their size, and also - most importantly - on the features (thoroughness) of software scaling. In some cameras (like the SJ4000, for example), different angles have their own names - Wide (wide), Middle (medium), Narrow (narrow). In other cameras (SJ5000) these angles are referred to literally, by specific numbers. It should be remembered here that when the viewing angle is indicated, for example, 170 °, then the angle is meant not horizontally, which seems natural, but diagonally across the frame. Let it be unnatural, but what an impressive figure it turns out!

The result of changing the viewing angles in the considered cameras is easiest to show visually:

SJ4000 WiFiSJ5000X

WideMiddleNarrow170°140°70°

And now the final stage: checking the change in the nature of the picture (mainly only resolution) when changing the viewing angle. Of course, the clearest way to find out the resolution is to shoot a test pattern. In cases with cameras that have ultra-wide-angle optics, it is impossible to remove such a table, so you have to remove only one part of such a table, the key one, which is printed on several sheets and has a meter in height. After shooting this target from different distances, the videos are combined in the video editor with the picture of the full table until the proportions match. The resulting fragment accurately shows the resolution of the wide-angle camera, but keep in mind that this figure only applies to the central part of the frame, that is, to the center of the lens. The resolution of the considered cameras at different viewing angles can be estimated in the following table:

SJ4000 WiFiSJ5000X
WideMiddle170°140°

Narrow 110°70°

You can see with the naked eye that you can’t joke with the SJ4000 camera - you will only have to shoot with the maximum angle, Wide. Since at other angles there is a serious decrease in resolution, and the emerging moiré can seriously spoil the picture. But the SJ5000 camera is a completely different matter! No matter how you change the viewing angle in it, the resolution remains the same in all cases, reaching 1200 TV lines along the horizontal side of the frame.

Thus, for the SJ5000 camera, we found two priority recording modes: pseudo-4K with a size of 2880 × 2160 at 24 frames per second, or 1920 × 1080 at 60 frames per second. Considering that, after all, the maximum frame size in this camera is the mentioned pseudo-4K, then we will subsequently shoot in this mode. For the same users who care about high smoothness of movement, it is recommended to switch the camera to 1080 60p and completely forget about other modes.

By the way, in the case of the SJ5000 camera, the viewing angle can be changed in one more case: when the stabilizer is turned on. Yes, this device is equipped with an electronic (software) stabilizer, which is available in all current smartphones. Only this item is called in the service menu somehow too ornate, completely “off topic” - GyroSensor. You don't know right away. And then there's the gyroscope...

But back to the stabilizer. The effectiveness of the electronic stabilizer directly depends on the quality of the software that analyzes the image shift and, if possible, compensate for it due to the free area of \u200b\u200bthe matrix, as well as, of course, on the power of the processor that performs this work. Somehow I don’t really believe in the superpower of the processor on which an inexpensive camera is built. Therefore, some kind of verification is required.

Not very important, to be honest. Most likely, an electronic stabilization algorithm of the “camera” type is used here, which is designed to compensate for micro-shaking of the hands, a natural tremor that occurs when shooting hand-held, when the operator and the camera are motionless. Such an algorithm is in no way suitable for compensating for shaking during the movement of the operator and the camera itself. Although, in such cases, optical stabilizers in serious large-sized video cameras do not always save. There are, of course, rare exceptions on the market, but even those are achieved through the use of an additional advanced electronic stabilizer along with the optical, which smoothes the movement even more. True, so far such smooth stabilization is available only when shooting in Full HD - modern camcorders have not yet matured to acceptable software stabilization of 4K video.

The next issue that needs to be considered is the rolling shutter (for more details, see the material ). In the case of an action camera, which is designed to capture fast movement and jerks, a high level of rolling shutter is simply unacceptable.

When testing conventional cameras with a normal field of view, we often measure the angle of the verticals, doing this with a rotating cylinder setup with a vertical bar. But with such lenses that are installed in the cameras in question, this is pointless - the viewing angle is too large, and the geometric distortion in the frame ("fisheye") is too large. For the same reason, the observation of the tilt of the verticals in the "live" video turns out to be ineffective - any tilt is "eaten up" by a too wide viewing angle and the same fisheye. However, the "jelly" in the frame will not hide any fisheye. In order to find this jelly, we will drive both cameras on an electric car.

To view in a larger size, click the button Original size

Yes, "thanks" to an uncleaned road frozen in the morning, an ordinary trip turns into an extreme rally with regular jams, but in solving our problem, this is even better - the degree of shaking increases tragically. What helps to see the difference in the level of jelly in the picture that the compared cameras give. And there is a difference, and quite predictable: the more pixels in the matrix used, the higher the level of rolling shutter (provided that information is read from both matrices at the same speed). And of course, the multi-megapixel SJ5000 loses (or wins?) in this competition, giving a little more jelly-like distortion of objects in shooting with strong vibration.

When shooting with a less aggressive level of shaking, or with a higher amplitude, the jelly appearance of the rolling shutter becomes much lower. They can even be completely neglected.

It hardly makes sense to study the quality of encoding in action cameras using static shooting examples. The flaws in the camera's encoder are best shown in scenes where there is a lot of movement, such as fast-moving objects or turbulent water flow. These flaws consist in a noticeable pixelation of gradient surfaces, which is caused by a banal lack of bitrate. And our cameras are just not friendly with the bitrate - remember, the maximum bitrate even in the 4K version is only 20 Mbps.

Indeed, such a compression quality cannot be called ideal, there is pixelation, blurring, and “torn” edges of objects - all the same encoding artifacts caused primarily by too low bitrate in both cameras. Perhaps, for 4K it would be nice to raise the bitrate to at least 50 Mbps.

We have already said that the cameras in question can work as car DVRs. Here it is necessary to make the necessary clarification: the cameras can function as almost full-fledged registrars. After all, the registrar is considered to be one that works on the “plug and forget” principle - when turning the key in the lock activates the on-board power system, the registrar must turn on and start video recording on its own, the driver should not reach for the camera to find the power and record buttons. But the power system of our cameras is designed as expected: when the corresponding parameter is enabled in the camera settings (Car mode), both cameras automatically turn on and start recording when power is supplied to the USB input. In the same way, cameras automatically stop recording and turn off if the USB power goes out (but they turn off not instantly, but after ten seconds, which is very, very thoughtful). In addition, the user can select the duration of the videos into which the recording will be divided, going “in a circle”: 3, 5 or 10 minutes. The user also has the option of imprinting the current date and time into the frame, plus the car number, which is entered in the camera settings. Finally, the penultimate nail in the “I can work as a registrar” badge: a motion sensor (the latter would be if the cameras had GPS, but it doesn’t). When the motion sensor is activated in the cameras, a software detector-analyzer is activated, which, in the background, when the video is not being recorded, continuously examines the frame for any change. As soon as a sufficiently large contrasting object appears in the camera's field of view, video recording automatically starts. As soon as the movement stops, the recording stops. However, it is a pity that this motion sensor does not have sensitivity settings, it should be raised that way twice.

There is no option in the SJ4000 camera settings to turn off the LED flashing while recording. But it's not scary: there is only one small blue light bulb located on the rear panel in the lower left corner of the case. Which, moreover, will not be visible if the camera is enclosed in the enclosed open box. But the SJ5000, as a more advanced device, flashes like a Christmas tree: behind, above and in front. And in front are the brightest LEDs. Fortunately, there was a setting in this camera that completely and / or partially turns off these bulbs.

How our devices cope with the role of a car DVR can be seen in the following comparative video. Since the resolution of the SJ5000 camera does not drop when changing the viewing angle, we took advantage of this and slightly reduced the angle - the result is obvious:

To view in a larger size, click the button Original size

Considering the lack of light on an overcast day, the result of shooting with the SJ5000 can be considered very high: the detail remains as high as possible. Just as well, this camera shows itself on a trip around the city at night. By the way, here both cameras were already set to the same conditions: both have the 1920 × 1080 mode enabled, the viewing angle is also the same maximum.

To view in a larger size, click the button Original size

Now we can confidently say that both cameras are functionally suitable for use as car recorders, but at the same time, the SJ5000 provides significantly higher detail in any conditions - day, night, with a wide viewing angle or a narrow one.

Both considered cameras are supplied with sealed boxes for shooting underwater. At the same time, there are settings in the camera settings that change the white balance so that the color in the frame matches the aquatic environment. Given the different color balance in the compared cameras, you can expect the same different white balance setting when shooting underwater.

The cameras considered in the same way process the frame with built-in filters. These color modes give the video you shoot a character that matches the name of the selected image color mode. More precisely, they must give.

The SJ5000X's high-speed shooting mode allows you to get videos slowed down by two, four and eight times (-2X, -4X and -8X respectively). In this case, the first two options are recorded in video files with dimensions of 1280×720 and a frequency of 30 frames per second, while the fastest shooting, which slows down the video by eight times, is saved in a 640×480 30p file. The quality of the picture, of course, falls along with an increase in the shooting speed, and in the case of an eightfold slowdown, there is no need to talk about any quality at all. Therefore, we will use examples with a more or less normal frame size, -2X and -4X:

Thus, for all microcameras, the main rule remains in force: light and light again. Attempting to film a sports event in a dimly lit gym or running at dusk will result in blurry, blurry video.

The cameras in question produce still images with a maximum size of 4032×3024 pixels.

In addition to shooting in JPG, the SJ5000X can also shoot in RAW, but we were unable to correctly open these images with any of the available software tools. If the reader wants to explore this format on their own - no attempt is torture, here is one of the pictures: sj5000-raw.raw (17 MB).

Both cameras also have interval and burst photography modes:

  • Interval photography: one photo every 2/5/10/20s
  • continuous shooting: 3/5/10 photos per second or continuous shooting by holding down the shutter button

Software

The HDMI output of both cameras can output live video. Both a pure signal and a signal with graphical information. Important: both cameras are connected to a TV or capture card in 1080 60i interlaced mode, and there are no video output settings in the cameras.

The delay of the video stream from video cameras when it is transferred to a mobile device is less than a second, and the maximum distance before the connection is lost reaches 60-70 meters in the absence of physical barriers and other Wi-Fi networks.

conclusions

The studied devices in many respects resemble analogues present on the market. However, the way it is: the components from which most gadgets are assembled are often the same. Only the software binding of the components and, possibly, power consumption differ. As for the software, the developer did a good job here, introducing the capabilities of a recorder and a motion sensor, artistic styles and time-lapse photography, a Wi-Fi adapter and an HDMI output with live video broadcast into the cameras.

Nevertheless, each camera has its own advantages and disadvantages, all of which can be easily found in this article, and specific operational features are indicated in the table of technical characteristics. It seems that these differences correlate well with the cost of devices, and the formula here is simple: the wider the functionality of the camera, the higher its price.

SJCAM SJ4000 has become the most popular action camera in the history of SJCAM. And do not be confused by its price, because the capabilities of this device are much more extensive than most cameras from other well-known brands. In this post, we will make a detailed review of the action camera of this Chinese brand.

When we first heard that a good quality action camera was on the market at a price of about 5,000 rubles, we were rather skeptical about this. We later learned that this device was released by a new company based in China. We guess that now you have the same feelings as we had then. After all, that is why you are reading this article, right?

SJCAM SJ4000 is a multifunctional action camera that allows you to record video at a resolution of 1080p x 30 fps and take pictures. It is waterproof at depths up to 30 m. The device is equipped with a large number of additional accessories. The camera was released in two versions:

  • Without WiFi
  • wifi version

Needless to say, the only difference between the two versions is the built-in Wi-Fi. We will try to explain why you may (or may not) need built-in Wi-Fi. We got a version of the camera with Wi-Fi support for the test, and in this review it will be the SJCAM SJ4000 Wi-Fi that will be considered. All this information can also be applied to the version without Wi-Fi.

The table below lists all the specifications of the SJ4000 Wi-Fi. They also apply to the version without Wi-Fi support.

Design

The first thought that arises for everyone who sees this action camera for the first time is: “Is this a GoPro?”

Quite enough. Its design is almost identical to the GoPro camera.

The dimensions of the device are 59.3 x 41.1 x 29.3 mm. It weighs about 58g including the battery and 44g without it.

The camera is much lighter and more compact than you might expect at first glance. When we first opened the box, we thought “Well, is this little one really capable of making a video?”. We liked the large selection of colors. The SJ4000 is available in 7 different colors.

Video Features

Although the SJ4000 does not have the capabilities of a DSLR or camcorder, this device is capable of creating truly fantastic videos for its price, the quality of which will suit most users. The f= 2.99mm F= 2.8 wide-angle lens allows you to cover a large area. With this action camera, you can shoot HD video in various modes and formats.

SJ4000 and SJ4000 WiFi are capable of creating videos in the following formats:

  • 1080p - 30 fps
  • 720p - 30fps
  • 720p - 60 fps (doubles frames, not true 60 fps)
  • WVGA - 60 fps

It should be noted that the SJ4000 does not support 60 fps, although it is mentioned in the specification. Therefore, if you really need video at 60 fps, pay attention to the SJ5000 model or other cameras, for example Xiaomi Yi. The frame rate affects the quality of your videos. More doesn't mean better. For example, all Hollywood movies were recorded at 24 fps, most YouTube videos were recorded at 30 fps.

Time Lapse Mode

While we were exploring the capabilities of the SJ4000 action camera, a fresh firmware was released from the camera manufacturer. Since our camera was original, we upgraded without any difficulty by following the instructions on the official SJCAM website. To our surprise, it turned out that the Time Lapse option is available in version 20150126. It allows you to create unusual videos.

How does Time Lapse mode work on SJ4000?

You can set the time interval on the camera to 3, 5, 10, 30 and 60 seconds. What does it mean? If you select a 10 second interval, the camera will capture a frame every 10 seconds. If you leave the camera for an hour (60 minutes), it will shoot 6 frames per minute, or a total of 360 frames per hour. By recording video at 30 fps, you get 360/30=12 second videos in one period of time.

Photo Features

You've probably already heard that photo and video functions cannot be combined in the same device. It must be designed for either video recording or still image capture. In very rare cases, the gadget is able to perform both of these functions, but as a rule, it has a prohibitively high price.

As video content becomes more important and used much more widely, companies are releasing devices that can take both snapshots and videos. But if you plan to use the SJ4000 only as a camera, we recommend choosing a regular or SLR digital camera.

When taking pictures with this device, you can choose between different modes, such as color, sepia, or black and white. In addition, by changing the white balance, you will make your pictures more interesting by adding a slightly warmer or cooler tone.

Photos taken with the SJ4000 look quite good, but are far from ideal. Perhaps the biggest disappointment is the resolution of photographs. Although the manufacturer claims that the highest number of megapixels is 12, according to the reviews of other users, this is not true.

Snapshots have the following options:

  • 12 MP, 4000 x 3000
  • 8 MP, 3264 x 2448
  • 5 MP, 2560 x 1920
  • 3 MP, 2048 x 1536
  • 2 MP, 1920 x 1080
  • 1.2 MP, 1280 x 720

In reality, photos taken at 8 and 12 megapixels look exactly the same as 5-megapixel ones. When zoomed in, the image looks blurry and details are not easily seen. Below are some photos we took with the SJ4000.

As you have already noticed, this camera cannot be compared to Nikon or Canon, but it takes good photos of better quality compared to the average smartphone. These pictures have been resized for faster loading, so we recommend downloading the original photos from the camera (the link is published above).

It is very convenient to use the SJ4000 when traveling due to its size and weight. The device easily fits in your pocket, you can quickly take a beautiful, high-quality picture, when, when you need it. With such a compact gadget, you will not look like a tourist and definitely will not become a victim of a pickpocket.

Accessories for SJCAM SJ 4000

In addition to the camera itself, the kit includes a huge variety of mounts and accessories. Here's what you'll find inside the box, it's an impressive set without exaggeration:

  • 1 SJ4000 camera with battery
  • 1 waterproof case
  • 1 bike mount
  • 2 base mounts
  • 1 clamp
  • 1 fixing base
  • 3 adapter holders
  • 1 adapter
  • 2 helmet mounts
  • 1 belt
  • 3 tapes
  • Double Coated Adhesive Tape
  • 1 cable
  • 1 USB cable to AC adapter
  • 1 instruction manual
  • 1 cleaning cloth

Some of these bases, straps and mounts can be combined with action cameras from other brands such as GoPro or Sony. By combining these parts, you can create an action camera tailored to your needs, whether you mount it on your bike, car, or yourself (glass mount requires a special car mount, available from our webshop). The illustration above clearly demonstrates the assembly methods and combinations of accessories and mounts.

Optional equipment

Of course, not all necessary accessories come with the camera. Accessories for SJ4000 you can choose and purchase in our accessories catalog.

SJCAM. Here is a list of additional items:

  • Bracket for car
  • HDMI cable
  • Belt for fixing the device on the waist
  • Charger for car
  • and many others

Waterproof case

Both versions of the SJ4000 come with a waterproof case that allows the camera to operate underwater at depths of up to 30m. We tested the camera in heavy rain with the case, and this did not affect the quality of videos and photos in any way.

It is worth noting that the cover negatively affects the sound recording. The device has an option to switch to Waterproof mode, which improves the quality of pictures taken underwater.

The camera fits easily into the case. After that, it becomes more difficult to press the buttons on the case, this is the only problem that arises during operation. Everyone understands that the case's hard shell is designed to protect the camera, but having to use force just to press the On/Off button is sometimes very annoying. The only problem with the case is the deterioration or complete disappearance of sound during recording.

If you want to see the camera in action underwater, check out these videos, one filmed in the Maldives and one in Long Beach.

Remember! A camera without a water case becomes vulnerable to moisture, so always wear a water case when shooting near, in or under water.

Car DVR

Probably the most useful option besides the standard options is the DVR function for the car. You can use this camera to record video while driving. This can be useful if you find yourself in a situation where you need proof for your insurance company. The camera has a motion detection function, the ability to block the video from erasing and turn on the recording when the ignition key is turned.

How to activate Dash-cam mode?

To activate this mode, you need to turn on the camera. Once turned on, press the Menu/Power button two or three times (depending on your firmware) until you activate Settings. Press the down arrow button until you get to Settings - DVR Mode. Press the OK button and activate the mode.

Webcam

Users often use the SJ4000 WiFi as a webcam. It makes better quality recordings than conventional webcams. Unlike most webcams, the device does provide a high-quality, widescreen image, so it may be difficult for you to get used to it at first. You can talk on Skype all day without any problems.

How to set up your SJ4000 as a desktop camera?

Unlike the previous option, to activate the webcam mode, you only need to connect the device to your computer using the micro USB cable that is included. The camera turns on automatically. You will see two indicators on the screen: Drive and PC Camera. The drive should be selected when you want to access recorded videos. So, select the PC camera indicator and press the OK button.

If you are connecting your device to your computer for the first time, it may take a few minutes for it to find the driver if you have Internet access.

A driver is a small piece of software that will allow your computer to recognize and coordinate interaction with your camera. It took our Windows 7 a minute. Depending on the OS of your computer, you may only need to connect the camera to it. Just make sure your computer has Internet access.

Home Security System (Motion Detection)

In our opinion, few people use this option on their SJ4000 action camera. We do not recommend using this device to protect your property, it is better to choose something more specialized. But an extra feature never hurts, right? The Home Security System option allows the camera to automatically turn on and start recording as soon as it detects movement in the room.

As a security device, this camera is not entirely reliable. Sometimes it detects even the slightest movement, and sometimes it does not react at all, even when you come close to it. Our advice: don't use it as a security camera. This feature can be useful during hunting where you can record running animals, or when you are ice skating and need documentary footage.

How to activate the security camera function?

You just need to turn on the motion detection function by selecting Settings - Motion detection. Select ON and press OK. Don't forget to turn off the mode when you don't need it as your battery pack may be draining.

Battery and Charger SJCAM SJ4000

The SJ4000 contains the same battery as the M10 and SJ5000, a 900mAh Li-Ion battery. Approximate battery life when recording video in 1080p 30 fps is about 100 minutes, which is very good for such a device. This means you can shoot continuously for 100 minutes without the camera turning off automatically.

However, if you plan on shooting a lot of video and don't want to worry about battery life, I highly recommend purchasing spare battery from SJCAM. You can buy it from us at a very affordable price.

The battery can be charged from a PC using a USB cable, AC adapter or car charger. The fastest way to charge is with an AC adapter, which is what we always use. But if you have time, the easiest way to charge your camera is to use USB.

If you prefer a car charger, it must be purchased separately. You can buy it from us together with a special mount, only 790 rubles.

WiFi

If you are reading this article from the very beginning, you already know that SJCAM SJ4000 is available in two versions: with and without Wi-Fi. Since this is the only difference between them, it's time to talk about the benefits of Wi-Fi for your camera.

Built-in Wi-Fi allows you to connect to and control the camera remotely from your Android or iPhone. The access range is 10-20m.

For us, having a remote access function is of great importance, since we shoot a huge amount of video. When we are shooting from a quadcopter, it is not possible to press the On / Off button, only using the Sj4000 Wi-Fi. You can also view photos and videos on your smartphone and download them without using a USB cable. However, in this case, data transfer will be slower. In order to take advantage of all Wi-Fi functions, you need to install a special application. Next, we will discuss the SJCAMHD/sjcam zone application in detail.

Free app SJCAMHD/sjcam zone

The app will help you update your camera to the latest firmware. Turn on Wi-Fi on your smartphone. Turn on the camera and press the up arrow button on the right side. If you did everything right, you will see an orange indicator flashing above the OK button. The LCD will show Wi-Fi information. Press the arrow key again. You will need to enter a password to connect both devices. The default password is 12345678 (check it in settings). Then activate the application and click the connect button. If you're having trouble, watch this video:

This application allows you to: view videos from your smartphone, take notes, take pictures, change available settings, import and export. Don't forget to turn off Wi-Fi after use as it drains your battery. A blinking orange light means Wi-Fi is enabled.

Firmware

When updating the firmware, you should be extremely careful. Download it only from the official SJCAM website. Read the installation instructions carefully. Failure to update may mean that you made a mistake during installation, this firmware is not applicable to your version of the camera, or your device is fake.

The updated software improves the quality of your photos, videos, and app features, and adds new features (such as time lapse).

On the official website you can download the latest firmware versions http://www.sjcamhd.com/firmware/

The best memory card for SJCAM SJ4000?

By default, the camera supports Micro SD cards up to 32 GB. SJCAM recommends using memory cards from trusted, reputable brands to get the most out of your work. Believe it or not, the quality and speed of your memory card can really make a big difference in how you record your videos. We strongly recommend using class 10 cards.
