KamAZ announced the signing of a framework agreement with Hawtai Motor Group Co on Thursday. The agreement provides for the creation of a joint venture to produce Chinese-made cars. The parameters of the new plant are not disclosed; a KamAZ representative said that they will be announced after the final agreement is signed. Hawtai did not respond to RBC's request. In October 2014, the Chinese company announced its intention to invest $1.1 billion in Russian car assembly production, the production volume was supposed to be 100 thousand cars per year. A year was allotted for construction. Now we are talking about the production of approximately 50 thousand cars per year, says an RBC source close to KamAZ. At the same time, as part of the joint venture, KamAZ plans, together with Hawtai, to build a truck production plant in the Chinese city of Tianjin.

KamAZ will contribute production space at its plant in Naberezhnye Chelny, truck production technologies and “management resources” to the joint venture, and Hawtai will contribute technologies, design developments and other know-how in the field of passenger car production, the companies said in a statement. The joint venture will conduct sales “using the advantages of the distribution networks of both parties.” “The agreement is aimed at supporting our long-term strategy of diversifying sales and developing new fast-growing markets,” KamAZ’s statement quotes the words of its CEO Sergei Kogogin. The Russian truck manufacturer had experience in the production of passenger cars - from 1988 to 2005, the small-capacity Oka was assembled at KamAZ.

Hawtai Motor founded in 2000, headquartered in Beijing. In China, the company produces models under the Hawtai brand on the platforms of South Korean Hyundai Motors under its license. The company's lineup includes SUVs Hawtai Boliger, Hawtai C9 Santa Fe, Hawtai Terracan, as well as sedans Hawtai E70 and Hawtai B11. Total capacity is 800 thousand cars and vehicle kits per year, production volume in 2014 is about 200 thousand cars. Hawtai cooperates with the famous transmission manufacturer ZF, as well as with the Italian company VM, which produces diesel engines.

Initially, Hawtai independently planned to assemble its models in Russia. Sites in the special economic zone of Tatarstan “Alabuga”, Togliatti, Sverdlovsk region and Cherkessk were considered for production. But in the end, the company decided to work in partnership with KamAZ. “In Russia, at the level of recommendations, there is a soft policy to curb the presence of Chinese automakers: they are recommended to work in the format of a joint venture with a Russian partner. This practice, by the way, was borrowed from China,” says Sergei Sanakoev, president of the Russian-Chinese Analytical Center.

In China, KamAZ plans to sell 50 thousand trucks a year, Kogogin said, also without giving a time frame. In 2014, the Russian company sold 26.4 thousand cars (minus 17.2% compared to 2013); it exported a little more than 6 thousand cars and vehicle kits (6.8% more than in 2013). That is, due to the Chinese market, KamAZ expects to triple last year’s sales.

Taking into account the fact that about 700 thousand trucks are sold annually in China, it will not be difficult for KamAZ to reach the volume of 50 thousand vehicles, a representative of the Russian company is sure. Autostat executive director Sergei Udalov calls KamAZ's plans ambitious, but realistic given the volume of the Chinese market.

Hawtai, according to Udalov, partnership with KamAZ will provide an opportunity to bypass bureaucratic barriers and quickly adapt to the peculiarities of doing business in Russia. At the end of the first half of 2015, sales of Chinese cars in Russia decreased by more than 60% compared to the same period last year, with an overall market drop of 37%: in January-June, 14.5 thousand models of Lifan, Geely, Chery and Great Wall. During a crisis, the budget segment of cars suffers the most, but it also recovers quickly when the market is on the rise, explains Udalov. This is exactly what the Chinese are banking on now.

The new technology can fully be called an international creation - more than one foreign automobile concern took part in its development. The 5490's family tree is branchy and intricate. Back in 2007, the KAMAZ company held a tender to create a project for a new series of cabins for its trucks. The competition, having unconditionally fulfilled all the terms of reference, was won by the South Korean diversified enterprise DMEC, which is part of the KIA Motors group of companies.

It, in turn, belongs to the Hyundai Corporation since the end of the last century. At one time, part of the shares of this corporation was owned by the Japanese Mitsubishi, but with the advent of the millennium, most of the shares of both auto companies were bought by the German Daimler. Thus, the new KAMAZ-5490 is the product of the best minds of the world's leading automakers.

The project was developed by engineers from Daimler Trucks and designers from OJSC KAMAZ, with the former creating the engine and axle, and the latter thinking about the cabin. Over 1.2 billion rubles were invested in the development process alone.

The new model also has its drawbacks, for example, the ability to carry only a very small supply of fuel - two 400-liter tanks. The figures are also not the best relative to the weight of the vehicle in running order – almost 8 tons. But the main tractor has the ability to work as part of a road train with a maximum load of up to 44 tons.

Cabin

The design of the cabin was based on the Mercedes-Benz Axor model. Then it was completely redesigned by the car plant’s engineers, and the designers gave it the features of a full-fledged flagship tractor.

In the photo it looks stylish, and its streamlined shape improves the aerodynamic properties of the car. The cabin has original radiator grilles, bumper, lower panel, running boards, and fenders. The cab is attached to the frame at four points on the air suspension, which makes it very soft.

At the bottom of the front panel, to the right of the driver, there are many different shelves and niches, and at the top there are two cup holders. The height of the cabin made it possible to place additional lockable compartments above the windshield. There is a radio and tachograph installed there. Thanks to the efforts of Kama designers, Kamaz 5490 will have an in-line six-cylinder diesel engine Daimler OM 457LA from Mercedes-Benz, which has received excellent reviews from drivers. Using BlueTec technology, it is able to operate according to the Euro 5 standard. The engine capacity is 11.97 liters and is capable of developing a power of 428 hp, with a maximum torque of 2100 Nm. The KAMAZ 5490 model uses the Mercedes HL6 drive axle, with a hypoid gearbox and a gear ratio of 3.077, which is a very good solution. It has the ability to lock the differential.

Suspension

Thanks to the efforts of KAMAZ designers, the new model of the mainline tractor is equipped with air suspension. The front part of the car's suspension is made on springs, which are located on the fingers. A roll stabilizer is also installed. Springs are capable of providing a smooth ride and creating comfortable conditions for the driver on the road. A double-cylinder air suspension system is installed on the drive axle. ECAS is used as a control system. The ability to adjust the air suspension allows you to set optimal ground clearance during loading and unloading operations, as well as ensure a smooth ride and stability when cornering.

The brakes on the KAMAZ 5490 tractor are all disc. The truck is equipped with an electro-pneumatic drive EBS and an ESP stability control system. To prevent slipping, an ASR system is installed. In addition, the car has a directional stability function.

The steering mechanism was previously tested on Dakar cars. Despite its impressive size, it is light and “obedient”. By the way, a test drive of KAMAZ 5490 showed that driving the car is no more difficult than driving a passenger car.

Frame

The frame of the KAMAZ 5490 is very technologically advanced. It is assembled from imported rolled products. All necessary brackets and attachments are secured using high-strength bolts. An underrun protection bar is installed under the first crossbar. The front part of the left side member is used to mount a bracket that combines the fastening of the front springs and the cab. Power steering is also installed on it. These integral brackets reduce weakening and twisting of the side members at this location. This improves handling and protects the frame from deformation.

Thanks to the manufacturability of the frame, it is possible to build a long tractor on it, with a central axle arrangement, for a road train with a trailer. With increased dimensions, the volume of the cargo compartment will increase from the usual 86 (93) to 110 cubic meters, which will allow you to transport more cargo. As part of a road train, the mainline tractor can operate with a maximum load of up to 44 tons.

It all started in the winter, when KAMAZ invited a group of bloggers on a tour of the workshops and the Scientific and Technical Center, in which we saw a car standing in a corner, not like the Nizhnekamsk cars so familiar to us, and even secretly took pictures. But they did not publish it by agreement with KAMAZ OJSC. The factory workers, in turn, promised to invite us to the presentation of the new long-haul tractor, and they kept their word.

The old KAMAZ is outdated. Not just outdated - this is a guest from almost the middle of the last century, a hard worker who has worked a lot, but is no longer suitable for the current century - neither in terms of comfort, nor in terms of safety requirements, nor in terms of the ergonomics of the workplace. It’s time for him to retire, and in the meantime his shift has grown.
The new model was created in close cooperation with Daimler Trucks, which owns a 10% stake in the plant. That is why the design of the tractor uses a Mercedes-Benz engine with a power of 428 hp. and a working volume of 12 liters, prepared in accordance with Euro-5 requirements and a Mercedes Axor cabin that meets all modern safety requirements.
I suspect that conversations will now begin on the topic: well, this is not a KAMAZ, this is a Mercedes that was repainted and a nameplate was hung up. No, comrades. This is KAMAZ. In the global automotive industry, completely different models from different manufacturers have long been built on the same platforms or with common units. Moreover, all the filling of the car, except for the cabin, engine, ZF gearbox and drive axles (and the last two modules are not produced by the vast majority of manufacturers in general) are their own.



Before the test drive began, we were warned that we would not be allowed to drive unless we held on. But, seeing the approach of the KAMAZ workers, I immediately realized that this was said for formality, because it was necessary. They'll let you in. And, of course, they let him in - not on the highway, at the training ground, but that was enough. We were driven along the highway by a driver who had practically stepped out of the TV screen where the TV series “Truckers” was shown.



The car turned out to be beautiful and comfortable. There was a lot of space, the hefty Misha stood in the cabin at full height. There are two full berths in the back. The seat is comfortable. Lots of shelves, drawers, baskets for everything that awaits a truck driver on a multi-day journey. I have only one complaint regarding ergonomics - the healthy steering wheel hub blocks the instruments when turning. But they explained to us that the finishing of the instrument panel is not final, and will be finalized, including taking into account our comments.



Yes, there is a tunnel in the engine compartment; it was not possible to create a flat floor. But it is very comfortable to sit on!



Probably, the materials used are not ideal, but firstly, it is necessary to reduce the cost of the car to increase its competitiveness, and secondly, compared to the old model, this is the pinnacle of comfort.










Now let's move on to the test drive.
It was the first time in my life that I drove a truck; riding the “Night Watch” Bychka when I was at Mosvodokanal doesn’t count. And I didn’t think it was so convenient and simple. It's easier than driving a car, honestly. Stunning visibility in all directions. A light but informative steering wheel, just a huge unusual size - by the way, I’m surprised, why don’t they make small steering wheels on trucks? A tribute to tradition? Sitting in general is many times more comfortable than in a passenger car. Factor of!
The automatic transmission shifts gears smoothly and quickly, and in manual mode you can choose to switch to one or two stages at once. The cabin has excellent sound insulation.
The traction reserve is amazing. A tractor without a load has the dynamics of a passenger car. It is clear that with a load it will be slower, but 400-plus horses is still power.

We were given three more vehicles - a two-axle military KAMAZ all-terrain all-wheel drive, the same three-axle (not pictured) and a dump truck, and a loaded one at that! We were not allowed to drive SUVs at the training ground, only on asphalt, but we were driven off-road.


It is, of course, more difficult to drive a loaded dump truck. There is a manual transmission, but despite this, it turns out to move off smoothly, no one stalled or twitched. True, when shifting “down” before a turn, I had to use the long-forgotten double clutch release with re-throttle a couple of times, despite the synchronized gearbox. Happened! Satisfied with himself, without false modesty.
