V. Vysotsky. From a song

Who carries our jet age on their shoulders?

Modern worker!

From a song.

Since ancient times, the professions of artisans have been sacred.

I came to work at the Dimitrovgrad Auto-Aggregate Plant (DAAZ) in May 1985, and since then I have not changed my plant. Our DAAZ is a satellite of VAZ. We make parts for Zhiguli, Lad, Sputnik, Kalin, etc. and not only for VAZ cars. From the personnel department, I was sent to the 33rd workshop of automatic production, or, as it was then called, the valve workshop. I ended up in the 221st brigade, which made the valves themselves - the main part. The brigade had 15 machine tools from the Swiss company Tornos. 5 pairs of machines that made the so-called “heel” and five single machines that processed the so-called “chamber”. The valve is the part through which the tires of the car wheels are inflated. Outwardly, it looks like a nail. The “nail head” - in our professional jargon “heel” - is the part of the valve that is directly attached to the rubber of the tire, and the narrow opposite end of the valve in our language is the “chamber” - the place through which air is pumped into the tire by a pump. There were only 3 such teams as ours, with the same machines in the Soviet Union. At ZIL in Moscow, at some factory in Kazan and here, in Dimitrovgrad. The machine that processed the “heel” performed turning, milling, drilling and thread-cutting operations and, after adjustment, could produce 10 varieties of parts. But the nomenclature was the same. I saw how the technologist, fiddling with one of our machines, made the eleventh part. Allegorically speaking, we "shod" all the cars Soviet Union, and our products also went abroad, including such countries as Germany, Japan and others. Capitalist countries bought our valves for gold, so that with our work we replenished the country's gold and foreign exchange reserves. The valves were made of brass. Brass looks very similar to gold. And the fact that the second part of the title of this article is associated with this noble metal is deeply symbolic. I repeat once again - brass is outwardly similar to gold, and with our work, I'm not afraid to say, we mined gold for the country and did big politics. The brigade consisted of two shifts. There are 10 submachine gunners in each shift. Five work on the "heel", five on the "camera" and 2 adjusters each. One for one machine, the other for others. Well, of course, and masters. We, machine gunners, were jokingly called machine gunners. The work is very difficult, hard, dirty, nervous. This is only one name, that the machine tools are automatic (Auto means itself). There's a lot manual labor. The machine itself is, as it were, a body, and the submachine gunner is his soul, psyche. You have to spin a lot around the machines, spin, run, jump, bend over. And not just for machines. I worked on the "heel". Sometimes on three machines. Everyone had to work. And head, and hands, and eyes, and feet. I once brought a pedometer to work. With his help, I found out that I was looking after a shift for several kilometers. As Karl Marx said, and he was an excellent techie, there are no two identical motors. And then there are the machines. Despite the fact that they are twins, each has its own temper and character. The part was tested by 10 different peacekeepers. The part has a complex geometry, and the quality requirements are strict. If a QCD controllers from the whole box they will find at least one defective part, the whole box goes to the bulkhead. VAZ system. It happened because of one detail, after sorting the box, subsequently no more defective ones were found. Sometimes, with great accuracy by eye, without conciliators, we determined one or another type of marriage, where the score went to tenths and hundredths of a millimeter. To become a mediocre machine gunner, you need to work for at least a year. The machine gunner has to keep in mind more than 50 operations for each machine. We, as pediatricians and veterinarians, must determine what is wrong and fix the problem. The machine is like a baby or an animal, it does not say where it hurts. The machines are very complex, capricious, still far from perfect and very unexplored, and by that time morally and physically obsolete. But, in spite of this, we, excuse me, made sweets from feces - the best valve in the world. When foreigners come to our plant, they wonder how we can make such masterpieces with such worn-out equipment? Each machine gunner made 7,000 parts per shift. Even more. But if the machines go perfectly. But more often than not, it doesn't. They often fail. It takes a lot of time until a locksmith or an electrician comes, or an adjuster fixes the problem. Any business takes time. One day my machine broke down. A locksmith was needed. And there was no locksmith that day. I go up to the foreman (he is also a serviceman):

Volodya, well, the machine is not working.

He blames me

Shura, do some work.

The machine had some kind of serious, but not fatal, let's say, malfunction. It worked, but with a creak, slowly, barely. But things progressed slowly, little by little. I remember the film "Lenin in October". The guard says to Lenin:

Vladimir Ilyich, all sorts of people come to you, go and find out what's on their minds. How can I protect you?

Lenin answers him:

Protect somehow.

Here we also often worked somehow. But things were going on.

Once, together with the foreman, we prevented the stoppage of the VAZ conveyor. A helicopter flew in from the VAZ. Our parts were missing. It was Saturday. The plant does not work on the second shift on Saturday. I and the foreman, who is also a machine gunner, stayed for several hours overtime, made several necessary missing boxes. I am on the "heel", the foreman is on the "camera". The helicopter on the same Saturday took the parts to Togliatti.

In our work, it is necessary to take into account a lot of various small details, after neglecting which, problems begin. "There are frequent complications, where frequent simplifications." A variety of emergencies and devilry happen to us. And also have to solve all sorts of puzzles. I even had to work with a stick. Yes, the most ordinary stick. The electric switch went out. The machines are up, the knife switch is above the machines. You can't get it by hand. I had to hit the tongue of the switch with a stick to turn it on. And so he passed out several times per shift. Several times there were floods and fires. We'll come to work in the morning, there are puddles around the machines. It rained at night, and the roof was full of holes. Or another case. Karschik accidentally ran a fork into a pipe from which water gushed out. It happened, for no apparent reason, the machines suddenly flared up. It used to be electric. As Edita Piekha sings, oh, what just happened to us. So we were all extremists. Once, someone stole a motor from one of the machines. I don't understand how the thieves so quietly managed to steal such a burden and transport it outside the factory? You never cease to be amazed at the ingenuity of thieves. And one day a funny thing happened. One guy from our shift skipped a week. And here's what happened. He desired a neighbor's wife. But their husband caught them. The husband was not alone. With friends they cleaned his face. The man did not go to work for a week until the insignia disappeared from the face. This colleague of ours, having come to work, told us this story and asked for our forgiveness, having previously told the same to his superiors. The shop management said: "If the brigade forgives, we don't mind." We have forgiven him. Indeed, as Shakespeare said: Love is an exception. Funny, but not funny.

Extreme heat in summer. The air in the workshop, in addition to the sun, is also heated by the machines. The saturator plant has a long queue. People are fainting. In winter, the workshop, on the contrary, is dog cold. Hands are often in abrasions, scratches, splinters. And not just hands. Fingers were often cut and pinched. But we didn't consider it an injury. Dirt under the nails, which was very difficult to wash off. Hair and robes are constantly in oil. Hassle. Each time we overestimated the plan, and very often we had to work at night and two shifts in a row, contrary to the Labor Code. But the plan was abandoned. When, after two shifts in a row, the second and third, returning home (and then the Ikarus were still running), I fell asleep right on the bus. After work, we were like dead lemons. One of my closet neighbors in the locker room, who works on the next door crew across the aisle making valve caps, once told me that he once had to work around the clock. 3 shifts in a row. Without knowing it, we did big politics with our work. I repeat, our valves were sold abroad for gold. They had high demand. That's why we were overstated. So, our country received more gold. What is the economy of the state, such is the policy. Yes, the work was very hard, not everyone could stand it. But we were well paid. In those Soviet Gorbachev times, I personally got 270 rubles a month. This is despite the fact that I often stayed in night shift for a vacation. I had to travel a lot around the country, but the administrative ones didn’t let me, only with working off. Some guys from our brigade made money for 300. Sometimes even under 400. But this money had to be earned. Such money will not be paid for anything. We had the highest tariff rate in the workshop. However, there is a very high staff turnover. Our masters even earned more than the masters of other brigades. Until the beginning of the 90s, when the workshop ceased to exist, the last 5 years in our team, only one of our shifts, 7 foremen were replaced. And what about workers?

In our shift there were 2 communists (one secretary of the party organization of the workshop), both adjusters and several Komsomol members, the brigade was international. Russians, and Tatars, and Mordovians, and Chuvashs, and an Azerbaijani, and a Georgian, and a Jew, and even a gypsy with an earring in his ear, who served in the army, a Komsomol member and at the same time had drives to the police, worked in it. The guys had the following surnames: Gorbachev, Bagirov, Kogan, Lyubimov, Lezhnin.

I'll explain. In those times of perestroika, the first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Azerbaijan was Baghirov. I don't remember the name. Leonid Kogan is a great violinist, People's Artist of the USSR, laureate of the Lenin Prize, professor. And yet - Pavel Kogan, poet, author famous song"Brigantine". Yuri Lyubimov is the chief director of the Taganka Theatre, the most avant-garde theater in the country. Lezhnin (I don't remember his name), Honored Artist of the RSFSR, Ulyanovsk. He was the only one in our region who was allowed by the KGB to paint pictures about Lenin. Naturally, we were their namesakes. Our team was a model of the plant and our entire country. An alcoholic, a drug addict, a policeman, a recidivist (a killer-mokrushnik), and the mentally ill, and a genius worked in the brigade. Everything was mixed up and mixed into one heap. The people of the most different professions. Tractor driver, accountant, musician, mechanic, as I said, policeman, miner, etc. Two even with higher education plowed at the machines. And the geography was vast. One from Vorkuta (above the Arctic Circle), one from Kronstadt, one from Kuban, one from Azerbaijan, one from the Caucasus, one from Kazakhstan (from Baikonur), one from Siberia, one from Far East. During my work in the brigade, several people got married, including me. We even had our own blue beard. One was even married 4 times. In 1989, my wife and I went on a free trip to Yalta. There, my wife and I got to the concert of the popular singer Mikhail Muromov. In the hall, our couple was also sitting next to one married couple. My wife's chair was next to the chair of the young woman who was sitting on her lap. Small child. The girls started talking, and out of the corner of my ear I heard that the husband of that woman is a miner in Donbass and that he earns 180 rubles. Nearby were the submachine gunner's wife and the miner's wife. I remembered the famous song about the miners of Vladimir Vysotsky "Black Gold". I would like to end this article with the altered lines of this song about my profession as a submachine gunner with explanations. Not entirely accurate and poetic, but grotesque. The song "Black Gold" begins with the words:

Not space - meters of soil above me,

And in the mine there is no time for festive processions,

But we also own extraterrestrial -

And the most earthly of professions.

My version:

Not space - the roof of the workshop above me,

And in the workshop there is no time for festive processions,

But we also own the factory -

And the most automatic of professions.

Vladimir Vysotsky:

Any of us - well, why not a sorcerer?

From the underworld up coal with a sword.

We will take away the fuel from the devils -

They will have nothing to heat their boilers with!

Alexander Lezhnin:

Any of us and the magician and the wit,

From the inside of the machines, we put a sword into the valve box.

We will take gold from the gods -

They will have nothing to give their gifts!

Grotesque. It is not the gods who burn the pots, and Jesus Christ was also a worker.

Under gold details - the same color,

For gold, they take capital countries from us.

We precious metal will take away their moment,

Their pockets will be empty.

Capital countries pay for our products in gold.

Vysotsky:

Yes, we ourselves are like devils in the dust.

We torment the womb of Mother Earth,

But the earth is warmer and more reliable.

Yes, we ourselves are both in oil and in mud.

But our train will not leave empty.

We make cars on ointment

Which is faster and more reliable.

Here are the trolleys, amusing the soul,

They rush by like in a movie about chases.

And the joke "Give the country coal!"

LAN:
Machine tools rattle, clang, because steel

Rumble like in a movie about the chase.

And the joke "Give the country a detail!"

We feel on our own palms.

But we dig deeper: hunger is insatiable.

We forget, rummaging in anthracite.

Yes, we are in a big profit,

But we can hardly hide the hunger.

Sometimes delving into your own soul

We forget when doing details.

Blown up, stacked, chipped

Black reliable gold.

Done, checked, stacked

Yellow solid gold.

Our products are a reliable way to invest. Detail - yellow - under gold.

Yes, mining is a difficult profession. In terms of occupational mortality, they are in first place. But they work for 6 hours, and we often for 16. And they earned from 180 rubles, and we 300. Question: who has a better job?

P.S. My mother was a teacher. I never told her about my work. We all studied at school, we know what kind of work teachers have. Sometimes teachers even end up in a psychiatric hospital. So, she asked me: “How do you work there? I wouldn't last two hours."
