Watch TV channels on different devices. Connecting to the Internet manually using some providers as an example

Most users have a local area network at home with Internet access. As a rule, inexpensive routers - Entry Level - from the entry-level segment are used to create a "mesh". These routers include D-Link model Dir 615. Let's take a closer look at this device.

The Dir network device, which supports standard PPPoE, PPTP/L2TP, IPv4/v6 protocols, is a simple router for building a home local network both in wired and wi-fi mode.

The main characteristics of the Dir model 615 router are the same as those of most routers in this segment.

Features include

  • DHCP server support
  • additional network protection,
  • dynamic DNS,
  • connection to the provider's VPN server, firewall
  • and many others, which will be discussed below.

It is possible to control using a mobile device running Android or iOS.

Appearance

Dir equipment is a small box with rounded corners. The body is black. At the top there are two antennas for wi-fi-network. On the reverse side there are: a WAN port for connecting a network cable from a provider, four LAN ports for connecting devices to one local network.

Connection and preparation for work

To prepare for operation and launch of the D-Link router, all the necessary parts are included in the package. First, unpack the box with the equipment, take it out and connect the power cable. The next step is to carry out a preliminary configuration for its operation with the Internet.

Settings

Connecting a D-Link router to the World Wide Web is done in two ways: automatic and manual. Most often, settings are carried out according to the first scenario, but there are situations when manual configuration is required.

A workstation is preliminarily prepared: it indicates the receipt of an IP address in automatic mode. This is checked as follows.

Automatic setting

In automatic mode, the user performs the minimum settings for the D-Link Dir model 615. The main work for him is performed by the "Settings Wizard" (English - Wizard). The program is located on the disk supplied with the D-Link version Dir. After launching it, you must specify an Internet service provider from the list of available ones. Then the user enters the credentials provided by the provider: login and password, and also comes up with a new password for wireless communication. Next, the "Wizard" will make the rest of the settings on its own, reboot the D-Link Dir device.

Connecting to the Internet manually using some providers as an example

Manual configuration of the D-Link Dir model is carried out through any available browser. First you need to connect the equipment to the workstation with a network cable. The next step is to find out the IP address of the D-Link Dir router. It is usually located at the bottom of the equipment:

The manufacturer offers two options for the user's choice.

The main window for setting the "Dlink" of the "Dir-615" model opens before the user. Since it is necessary to set up a wi-fi router depending on the Internet service provider, we will consider this process using the example of the most famous providers.

Set parameters on Dir-615A as above. Login and password are taken from the contract with the Internet service provider.

Rostelecom

Setting up the D-Link Dir modem for Rostelecom is identical to the previous provider, since the same Internet access protocol is used.

The only difference is the username and password fields. Each provider provides unique names. Everything else is a complete match.

"Beeline"

The Beeline service provider uses a different protocol to connect - L2TP. To use it, you must have a controlling VPN server on the provider's side, the ability of the user's operating system to support the tunneling function in VPN connections. Support is available in all operating systems of the Windows family, not lower than Vista.

  1. Go to the WAN menu, then fill in the following fields:
  2. Connection type - L2TP + "Dynamic IP".
  3. The fields "Username" and "Password" are filled in in accordance with the contract from Beeline.
  4. After entering the data, the information must be saved, and the D-Link Dir must be reloaded.

NetByNet

A reminder on how to set up a D-Link wifi router for the NetByNet provider is almost the same as the configurations of the Dom.ru provider.

To bind the MAC address of the router to the provider, you must specify it. Click the icon highlighted in red in the screenshot:

In the fields "Username" and "Password" enter the data from the contract with the Internet service provider NetByNet.

Backup connection via 3G, 4G

The Dir router does not have a backup Internet connection function via 3G and 4G USB modems.

Wireless network

Setting up wi-fi on Dir is done in the Wi-Fi section:

The next step is to consider how "on a D-Link router. To do this, click the "Change" button, go to the protection of the wireless connection.

Network security mode is set to WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSKmixed. In the "PSK Encryption Key" line, you come up with your own password for the wireless network. The rules are standard: at least 8 characters, Latin numbers and letters diluted with special characters. Leave the encryption mode TKIP+AES, and the protection key renewal period unchanged. If you need to change the password on Dir for Wi-Fi, the same method applies.

After all the changes made, it is necessary to save, reboot the D-Link router. This completes the Wi-Fi setup on Dir.

Setting up as a repeater (repeater), amplifier, adapter or access point

The Dir network device supports different modes of operation: repeater, amplifier, adapter, access point. Instructions for D-Link Dir version 615 on mode selection and configuration will be given in separate articles.

More detailed information about the connection modes of a network device is available on the official website of the manufacturer.

IPTV

Configuring a D-Link Dir wi-fi router to work with IPTV is quite simple. First of all, the TV set-top box is connected to the TV, and the network cable is connected to any connector on the D-Link network device.

After that, apply the changes by clicking the "Change" button.

Individual user connection settings

The network device does not support any custom settings.

Additionally, a DNS server is configured on Dir, depending on the city of residence. To do this, go to the "Advanced" section, then - "Name Servers". For manual mode, check the box "Manually":

In the "Name servers" field, enter the values of the client's city of residence. This data is taken on the official website of the provider or found out when calling the provider's hotline.

Security settings (antivirus, firewall)

On D-Link Dir, the manufacturer has built in a firewall that protects the home station from network attacks or outside hacking. To correctly configure the firewall, certain knowledge is required. If the user does not have an understanding of the principles of the firewall, you should contact a company specialist.

The second point of protection is the creation of virtual servers that help direct network traffic through them to a different IP address. If there is a network attack, such a server will help pass it to a non-existent host, and the rest of the equipment will continue to function normally:

To create, you must click the "Add" button, set the parameters of the future server:

After creating, click the "Edit" button, confirming the creation. This completes the initial firewall configuration.

Parental control is set on D-Link Dir in the "Control" section, then - "URL filters":

There are two options to choose from: block access to specified addresses only, or block access to all sites except those listed below. If only a few sites need to be left for a child, the second function is the best choice. Add the necessary sites to the list of exclusions, and prohibit the rest.

Change button function

It is not possible to change the functions of the buttons available on the Dir hardware.

Printer setup

Model 615 from D-Link Dir does not support direct printer connection via USB. But through it, the user is able to connect to a network printer.

Setting up DLNA on the router

D-Link Dir equipment does not have a built-in DLNA server. It is used only as an intermediate link in the DLNA server chain running on a PC and a final media device.

Setting up a VPN server

Model 615 from D-Link Dir does not support the VPN server function. It can only connect to the VPN servers of providers using the PPTP or L2TP protocol.

Setting up a torrent client on a router

D-link Dir does not support the built-in torrent client, it only works with standard external programs.

Possible malfunctions and ways to eliminate them

  • The most common errors that the user sometimes encounters when working with the D-link Dir model 615 are related to the lack of access to the Internet. The first step to start with in such cases is to reboot the network device.
  • If this does not help, you should carefully check the cables to which the D-link Dir router is connected. Perhaps there is physical damage, it is worth replacing the faulty cable with another one. You also need to go to the router itself, check its network configurations to the Internet.
  • If none of the above helped, it is recommended to call a specialist, and also contact the provider's technical support services, perhaps the Internet access parameters have been changed.

Firmware update

Like any network device, version 615 Dir also supports updating its firmware. This procedure is called "update the firmware". This can be done in several ways. Timely updating helps avoid errors that can occur when working with a network device, adds new functions or expands the capabilities of current ones.

In addition to the new version, the manufacturer D-link also offers an archive of previous ones (Old folder), beta versions, that is, those that are under testing (Beta folder).

Via web interface

The first option is to use the web interface. To do this, go to the main menu of the router through the browser, left-click on the current firmware version:

The user will be prompted to specify a file to update. You must select the file with the .bin extension downloaded from the manufacturer's FTP server. Then click the "Update" button, wait until the update process is completed. At the end of the procedure, the network device will definitely reboot, this is necessary for the router to work with the new version of the hardware revision.

In the latest versions of the firmware, an automatic update module is built in. Now there is no need to look for updates yourself, Dir will do everything by itself. The only thing that is required is to confirm consent to the software update.

Via mobile app

The manufacturer has released the D-Link Click'n'Connect mobile application. With it, the phone is connected to the Dir router. Click'n'Connect fully configures D-Link according to its "needs", updates the current version of the hardware revision. It has a built-in automatic update checker.

The list of compatible models is in the application itself in the Google, Apple stores.

Download the app and run it on your own mobile device. A list of available networks will be displayed on the screen. You must select the desired access point. Once connected to D-Link, the app will automatically check for updates. If any are available, it will offer to download it and start the update process. It is enough for the user to confirm his consent, and then wait for the end of the process.

This completes the update of the hardware revision for the D-Link Dir wireless wi-fi router through the mobile application.

Via USB device

The D-Link Dir model does not have a built-in USB port, so software updates via a flash drive are not possible.

Reset router settings to factory settings

If for some reason the router stopped working, for example, setting the “wi-fi” to “Dir” of the “D-Link-615” model was unsuccessful, the router stopped distributing the wireless network, you should perform a factory reset.

The easiest way is to use the Reset button located on the back of the equipment. It is enough to press and hold it for 10-15 seconds. By blinking the indicator lights, it will become clear that the reset was successful, and D-Link has returned to the factory configuration.

Conclusion

The article informed how to connect a D-Link Dir router to a PC, set up Internet access on it. Here is a description of additional features: a firewall, a dynamic DNS server, and others. In general terms, it is told what to do in the event of a malfunction of this model.

pros

  • D-Link Dir is a budget model that stably maintains an Internet connection, distributing a wireless network within the range of the antenna. The correct firewall configuration protects the provider's subscriber from external network attacks, and support for the WPA2 protocol puts a barrier to hacking the wi-fi network.
  • Newer firmware versions have an automatic update feature. This allows the client not to waste time updating, just go to the main menu of the network device. If the manufacturer's website has the latest firmware version, it's easy to start the automatic update process.
  • For this model, there is support for the D-Link mobile application - Click'n'Connect - from the manufacturer. It is available for Android and Apple platforms.

Minuses

The disadvantages include the router case, made of budget material. And also there is no support for some functions, these are:

  • DLNA server;
  • torrent client;
  • VPN server;
  • USB connector.

Some buyers complain about the lack of quality fastening.

Rostelecom is one of the leading companies involved in the installation of high-speed Internet and IP-TV. Today, a popular option is also to provide a wireless network in the client's premises, which is done by installing a wi-fi router to the user's computer and then distributing an Internet connection to other devices through it (mobile phones, tablets, other computers, laptops, TVs). In this article, we will analyze the main issues that arise when connecting and configuring d link 615/620 wi-fi routers for Rostelecom.

Wireless Internet

To organize a wireless network, Rostelecom uses two models of wi-fi routers from d link: dir 620 and dir 615. Both models are almost identical, differing only in minor technical aspects, and their configuration has the same sequence of actions.

Both dir 620 and dir 615 are suitable for creating a wireless network and . A Wi-fi router and a cable to connect it to a computer are all you need to distribute the Internet to other devices. Thus, one of the two presented models is suitable for creating a wi-fi connection from Rostelecom.

Router connection

The greatest difficulty is the question of directly setting up wifi routers d link dir 620 and 615 for Rostelecom, but before proceeding to solve this problem, you must correctly connect the device to your computer.

This is done quite simply: on the back of the device, find the internet connector, which is highlighted with a white frame. Connect your internet cable to it. If you previously used the Internet directly through a PC, then this cable must first be disconnected from the network card.

Then take the cable that came with the router. It is much smaller in size. Connect one of its plugs to the router in any of the numbered connectors, bordered by a blue frame, and connect the other to the network card of your computer. Connect the power cable, respectively, to the surge protector. After you have completed the installation, you can proceed to setting up the router.

Router setup

The setup will take you a little more time, but it is quite simple.

Important: if you used the Rostelecom Internet via a PC, then disconnect from the Network before setting up. In the future, the router will automatically connect.

First, make sure that automatic obtaining of IP and DNS addresses is enabled in the local network settings. To do this, hold down the Win and R buttons, and in the pop-up window, write ncpa.cpl and click "OK". You will be presented with a list of available connections, select the one through which the router was connected and go to its properties. In the properties, go to the TCP / IP v4 section and check the boxes in the right places.

After completing this step, we proceed to the direct configuration of the dir 615/620 router for Rostelecom. To do this, you need to open your Internet browser and enter the address 192.168.0.1 there. The page that appears will require you to provide a username and password. By default they are set to admin and admin.

If the data is entered correctly, you will be taken to the main page, where the dir-615 / dir-620 router for Rostelecom is configured. At the same time, depending on the software embedded in the router, it may look different.

In the case of an older version of the software, you should first click on the “Manually configure” button. In the case of a more recent one - “Advanced settings”. In the menu that appears, select "Network" - "Wan". A list will open, at the end of which find the “Delete” button and click on it. Then go back and click on the "Add" button.

Fill in all fields according to the data below:

  • connection type - PPPoE;
  • name - do not change this item, or write “Rostelekom”;
  • login - this is your login, which is provided for connecting to the Internet;
  • password - the password that is provided to connect to the Internet.

After you have filled in all the fields, click on the “Save” button and reload the page. If everything is done correctly, the connection status after refreshing the page should change to “Connected”. Thus, all models of d link routers are configured, including dir-615 and dir-620.

Organization of connection security

By default, yours will be open to other users. In some cases, this is acceptable, but most often certain security measures are taken to restrict access. To do this, after completing the configuration of the d link-615/620 router for Rostelecom, you should set a password for your connection in order to protect it from unwanted connections. To do this, type 192.168.0.1 into your browser again.

On the main page, select “Setup Wizard…”. On the page that opens, you should fill in all the fields as follows:

  • SSID - the name of your connection, required so that you can easily distinguish it from other channels;
  • encryption type - select WPA/PSK;
  • PSK encryption key - a password that will need to be entered when connecting new devices to your wi-fi channel.

Following the advice from this article, you can easily set up a d-link dir-615 or d-link dir-620 WI-FI router for Rostelecom. After completing all the steps in the specified sequence, you will receive a ready-made wireless network with which all your personal computers, mobile devices and other equipment can work.

In order to get into the web interface of the router, you need to open your Internet browser and type 192. 168.0.1 in the address bar, Username - admin, Passwordadmin(provided that the router has factory settings and its IP has not changed).

In this instruction, we will step by step consider the process of setting up a wireless router to work with wired home Internet from Rostelecom. The guide is suitable for all the latest revisions of the Wi-Fi router:

  • DIR-615 M1
  • DIR-615 K1 and K2

How to connect a router

The correct DIR-615 connection scheme so that all connected devices have access to the Internet in the future is as follows:

  • An Internet cable from Rostelecom is connected to the Internet port on the back of the router.
  • If you have a TV box, it should be connected to one of the LAN ports
  • Connect the computer or laptop from which the configuration is being performed with the cable supplied with the router to one of the LAN ports on the Wi-Fi router. The initial setup is more convenient to do via a wired connection. However, if this does not apply to your situation, you can also set up via Wi-Fi.

Well, after the above steps, plug the router into a power outlet.

How to enter the router settings and configure the Rostelecom PPPoE connection

Note: if you previously launched a Rostelecom or High-Speed connection on your computer to access the Internet, turn it off for the duration of the setup and do not connect after it: the router will establish this connection itself. If it is launched on a computer, then the Internet will not work on other devices.

In order to enter the Wi-Fi settings of the D-Link DIR-615 router, launch any browser and enter 192.168.0.1 in the address bar, on the page that opens you will be prompted to enter your login and password to enter the router settings . (If nothing opens at the specified address, see).

Standard login and password for D-Link DIR-615 M1, K1 and K2 are admin and admin respectively.

After the correct entry, you will find yourself on the main page of the DIR-615 settings (if you are again “thrown” to the login and password entry window, then they were entered incorrectly or changed earlier: if you do not know them, reset the router to factory settings).

At the bottom of the page, click "Advanced Settings", then, in the network section, click on the "WAN" link.

A page with a list of connections will open, which will contain one single connection with a dynamic IP address. Click on it with the mouse, and you will be taken to the settings for this connection, which should be changed to work with Rostelecom Internet.

You must enter the following parameter values:

  • Connection type - PPPoE (this is what Rostelecom uses)
  • Username - login for Rostelecom Internet.
  • Password, password confirmation - password to enter Rostelecom.

Click the "Save" button. After that, the page with the list of connections will open again, and the newly changed one will be "broken". Also at the top of the page you will see an indicator notifying you that the settings you have made need to be saved. Do it.

Now refresh the page with the list of connections and, if everything was done correctly, you will see that the connection status has changed to "Connected". The Internet is now available on the computer.

How to set a password for Wi-Fi on D-Link DIR-615

The next task is to set the SSID (wireless network name) and password for it. How to do this can be seen in the video below, where it is shown in detail (although the video for DIR-300, all steps are completely similar).

TV setup Rostelecom (IPTV)

To set up Rostelecom television, on the main page of the router settings (not in advanced settings), select the "IPTV Setup Wizard" item and specify the LAN port to which the TV set-top box is connected. After that, just save your settings.

In previous articles, I began to consider setting up a Dlink DIR-615 WiFi router. So in the article "" we set up a PPPoE connection on our router. And already in the article “”, we set up a LAN and WiFi network, raised a DHCP server and got acquainted with some of the finer settings of this DHCP. Today we will talk about setting up IPTV on the Dlink DIR-615 router. In fact, multicast is configured quite easily (by ticking the right place), but I ran into the following problem. I have an ADSL modem on which two bridge connections VPI / VCI 1/32 for the Internet and VPI / VCI 1/33 for IPTV are raised, and the connection is raised by a WiFi router. But in such a bundle and with such settings, he does not want to show IPTV, although by connecting directly to the modem there are no problems with watching IPTV. Setting the WiFi router Dlink DIR 615 to bridge mode, and the modem router solves the problem (there is Internet and iptv shows). But there is another problem....

So in more detail. As I said, setting the router to bridge mode, and the modem to the router - there is both the Internet and iptv. But, when the Dlink DIR-615 code is configured in bridge mode, the DHCP server is automatically turned off, and via WiFi I need ip addresses to be assigned dynamically.
What I've done? Yes, everything turned out to be easy.

  1. I set the modem to router mode.
  2. I left the local IP address of the modem by default 192.168.1.1
All modem settings are over, now let's move on to setting up the Dlink router itself.
  1. We go to the router, how to do this I have already described in “”
  2. Go to “Manual Internet Connection Setup”

  1. Here we configure our router in router mode, only we choose the type of connection with the provider not PPPoE, but Static IP

  1. In the “IP Address” field we write ip 192.168.1.2, in the “Subnet Mask” field we write 255.255.255.0, in the “Default Gateway” field we write the ip address of our modem 192.168.1.1, in the “Primary DNS Server” field we write 192.168.1.1, in the “Secondary DNS Server” field, enter any DNS that you know (in case the telecom DNS stops working). We save the settings.
At this point, the setup for our Dlink DIR-615 router is almost complete, it remains only to allow multicast to pass through.
  1. Go to the “ADVANCED” menu and select the “ADVANCED NETWORK” submenu. And here in the “Multicast Streams” area, check the box next to “Enable Multicast Streams”. We save the settings.

Everything on this setup is completed. And we have the Internet, and IPTV works (and over WiFi too), and a DHCP server works.
This router holds IPTV very well, since the hardware is quite powerful. My iptv worked for a little more than three hours (then I just turned it off), while one computer worked via LAN and the other via WiFi. The loss of IPTV was not noticed.
