Much depends on the managerial qualifications of an entrepreneur, his ability to avoid fairly standard mistakes - those that kill most young firms. Finally, entrepreneurship is by no means limited to small businesses. For example, one of the richest men in the UK - Sir Richard Branson, owner of Virgin Airlines and many others who have the common word “Virgin” in their name - created a huge business empire, acting like a typical entrepreneur all his life.

The vast world experience of entrepreneurship allows us to assert that this is not only not a game, but a difficult area of \u200b\u200bprofessional activity. Failure to understand this is the reason for the 9 fatal mistakes that most often ruin young firms:

  1. incompetence in management;
  2. lack of experience;
  3. poor financial management;
  4. inability to develop a strategic development plan;
  5. uncontrolled growth of the company;
  6. unsuccessful placement of the company;
  7. poor control over stocks of resources and finished goods;
  8. unskilled pricing;
  9. inability to move from the stage of entrepreneurship to the stage of regular management, when the founder of the company transfers the current management of the business to hired managers.

In order to avoid such a development of events, an entrepreneur must:

  • know the essence of your business to the smallest detail;

  • skillfully manage financial resources;
  • have the skills to analyze the financial statements of your company;
  • learn how to effectively manage the personnel of the company.

But even if an entrepreneur is smart enough to avoid all these mistakes, and his business is developing successfully, you still cannot call his job easy. The fact is that almost any entrepreneur is faced with income instability, the risk of losing the entire business, irregular working hours and high labor intensity, low income until the business becomes large enough, the nervous nature of the work, full responsibility for all the affairs of the company ...

Obviously, the main (although not the only) goal of the owners and managers of the firm is to ensure successful development her business and personal enrichment on this basis. But how can this be achieved? An analysis of business practice shows that the success of this kind of effort is determined by two factors (Figure 10-7):

  1. growth in sales and assets;
  2. state support.

We note right away that in reality the success of a firm is associated with the growth of only those sales that are profitable, and with a level of profitability not lower than a certain (for a given firm) minimum. And similarly, asset growth is effective only if it allows (directly or indirectly) to increase the production of just such a profitable product.

This distinction is, of course, very conditional, since effective investment is unthinkable without effective management, that is, investing money in business development. As for the concept of "effective management", it is such a management that allows you to ensure the use of funds invested in the development of the company to fulfill two interrelated conditions (Fig. 10-9):

  1. increasing the competitiveness of the company's products;
  2. increasing the market value of the firm.

Both of the aforementioned conditions are extremely important today for Russian firms, but their managers are far from always being aware of them, and all the more rarely are they embodied in their real action programs. And this is the reason why so many russian firms (especially in industry) are going through hard times today, as they are being pushed out of the domestic market by foreign competitors who have better mastered the rules of creating a competitive and therefore successful business.

Accordingly, it is not as widespread as we would like it to be, it is still widespread among russian managers and understanding that increasing competitiveness is not so much the result of the struggle for restrictive import duties imported goodshow much a consequence of the choice and implementation of a well thought out marketing strategy (Fig. 10-10).

As shown in fig. 10-10, developing such a strategy requires the firm's managers to regularly review four key elements:

  1. the position of the firm in the market, that is, how its products are perceived by potential buyers, what level of technical excellence, quality and reliability they expect in this case;
  2. market demands, i.e. what needs are presented by consumers in the market today or what their needs can be tried to satisfy tomorrow;
  3. opportunities to reduce costs, that is, whether our firm can reduce the production costs of its goods faster and to a greater extent than competitors, creating opportunities for itself to sell these goods at a lower price;
  4. the possibilities of creating differentiated products, that is, whether our company can create modifications of its products that are different in properties from what competitors do, and therefore more attractive to consumers even at the same or higher price than competitors.

This kind of analysis is the basic foundation of any marketing activity. And this has to be reminded only because managers of many Russian enterprises still allow themselves to neglect the search for answers to these questions. But this leads them to the development of often extremely unsuccessful marketing strategies, and accordingly to making equally senseless price decisions and - in the worst cases - becomes the cause of the death of enterprises.

In order for a new business to have a chance of success, an entrepreneur needs to find the right answers to the following questions:

  • What kind of goods or services should be offered to customers in order to attract their attention?
  • How should the production of goods or the provision of services be organized in order to achieve the quality or those costs (and sales prices) at which buyers want to buy from us?
  • How should you advertise your products or services so that buyers notice them and want to buy?
  • Where to get the money to pay all the costs of setting up a company and organizing the production of the first batches of goods?

An entrepreneur should look for the answer to the first three questions in the area:

  1. production management;
  2. marketing;
  3. financial management (Fig. 10-11);
  4. accounting;
  5. information technologies.

Production management is understood as the solution to the questions of how many and what kind of workers and other production resources a firm should use to create and organize sales of its goods and how to do this with minimal costs with the required quality.

Such a decision is usually made on the basis of management principles, which, according to one of the founders of management, Henri Fayol, include:

  1. division of labor. This is a natural phenomenon. Its goal is to increase the quantity and quality of production with the same effort. This is achieved by reducing the number of goals to which attention and action must be directed. Moreover, the division of labor applies not only to technical works... The result is the specialization of functions and the separation of powers;
  2. power (plenipotentiary) and responsibility. Authority is the right to give an order, and responsibility is sanctions - awards or punishments - accompanying actions. Where there is authority, responsibility also arises;
  3. discipline. It is essentially obedience, diligence, activity, demeanor, movement. Discipline involves the implementation and respect of the agreements reached between the organization and its employees;
  4. unity of management, or one-man command. Only one boss can give an employee two orders regarding any action;
  5. unity of leadership, direction. One manager and one program for a collection of operations that serve the same purpose. Each group acting under one goal should be united by a single plan and have one leader;
  6. subordination of private, personal interests to the general. The interests of one employee or a group of employees should not prevail over the interests of a larger organization up to the interests of the state as a whole;
  7. staff remuneration - payment for the work performed. It should be fair and, if possible, satisfy both personnel and the organization, both the employer and the employee;
  8. centralization. Like the division of labor, centralization is a natural phenomenon. However, the appropriate degree of centralization varies according to specific conditions and is resolved by finding the measure that gives the best overall performance;
  9. hierarchy, or scalar chain. This is a series of leadership positions, from the highest to the lowest. It is a mistake to avoid unnecessarily from the hierarchy, but a much larger mistake is to maintain it when it can be detrimental to the organization;
  10. order. The formula of material order is a certain place for every thing in its place, the formula of social order is a certain place for each person in its place. Graphical tables, diagrams greatly facilitate the establishment and control of both social and material order;
  11. justice is the result of a combination of benevolence with justice;
  12. the constancy of the staff. High employee turnover is a cause and a consequence of poor business conditions. A mediocre leader who values \u200b\u200bhis place is definitely preferable to an outstanding, talented manager who leaves quickly and does not hold on to his place;
  13. initiative - the development of a plan and its successful implementation. Freedom of proposal and implementation also falls under the category of initiative;
  14. unity of staff, or corporate spirit, is a great strength in an organization.

But in today's markets, good management alone cannot ensure a firm's success. This requires mastery of marketing methods.

The main idea of \u200b\u200bmarketing is not to sell what is produced, but to produce only what can be sold with a good profit.

Usually, speaking of marketing, this means the activities of the company associated with:

  1. market research in which it is supposed to sell their goods or services;
  2. advertising of goods or services;
  3. product promotion through different methods attracting the attention of buyers;
  4. competent setting of prices for goods or services;
  5. selection of a range of goods or services that will be offered to customers;
  6. determining who, where and how should sell the company's products;
  7. organization of service.

Accordingly, it is customary to talk about four key elements of marketing - the so-called "four Ps": product (product), price (price), promotion (promotion), place (place).

In reality, marketing is a set of methods, the use of which helps the owners of the company more accurately understand what they should do in order to earn a profit and maintain this opportunity for many years. The importance of these methods for ensuring competitiveness is so great that firms spend more and more money on it every year.For example, in the United States, more than $ 300 billion is spent annually on marketing only for consumer goods.

When it is clear with what and how the company will enter the market and how its production activities will be organized, it is time to think about where and on what conditions the company can obtain cash for their development and how to dispose of these funds, so that they are always enough for the normal business. The range of these issues relates to financial management.

At the same time, the main allies of financiers are always accountants, that is, specialists who are able to organize the prompt receipt and analysis of information about the monetary results of a firm's work. Without such information, the leaders of the company cannot correctly assess how well their business is going and whether there are any problems in it that threaten in the future with insolvency and even bankruptcy.

Today, one more important area has appeared in the technology of company management - information technology. Specialists in this area are engaged in the creation of technical and software systems that allow you to quickly receive and process information about all aspects of the company. Neither an accountant, nor financiers, nor marketers, nor company managers can do without this in today's rapidly changing world.

A thoughtful and competent solution to problems related to management, marketing, accounting and information technology determines the economic result of the firm's activities (Fig. 10-12).

And if an entrepreneur started his own business, already having some experience of working in business, even if someone else's, and most importantly - understanding how to look for the right solutions in the field of management, marketing and finance, then he can create a successful business even without especially original ideas.

Let's go back to the four key questions facing an entrepreneur deciding to start a new business. The last of the listed, but the second most important question: where to get the money to create and then expand the business?

Usually, the basis for starting many small businesses is the personal savings of their owners. Where to get money for development?

As seen from Fig. 10-13, there are many sources of such funds. Many entrepreneurs do not resort to external sources of funding and only manage internally, drawing money from the reserve funds (which they created in the beginning of the business in case of unforeseen difficulties), retained earnings and depreciation.

But often these internal sources are insufficient. And then businessmen start looking for an opportunity to raise funds from external sources. This can be a credit bank (short-term - for up to a year or long-term - with a repayment period of several years), the sale of rights to the capital of its company in the form of securities (shares), accounts payable, i.e., consignments of production resources received from suppliers but not paid yet.

Of course, business can make an entrepreneur rich, but it can also deprive everyone of their hard-earned money. To reduce the risk of ruin, it is helpful to try to plan for the actual activity before starting the actual activity. For this, a novice entrepreneur should prepare a business plan, in which he must clearly describe for himself and for those from whom he will ask for money to develop his business:

  1. what product or services it will offer to the market;
  2. what buyers and how he hopes to attract;
  3. how he hopes to beat the competition;
  4. what is required to organize a business.

In order to prepare a useful and realistic business plan, it is useful for a budding entrepreneur to do the following:

  1. assess the conditions for business development, which involves determining the favorableness of the general economic situation for starting a business and the state of affairs in the market where it is planned to enter;
  2. develop a management plan, which should define the organizational structure of the new company (what divisions it will have, for which each division will be responsible, who will report to whom), production methods and the necessary equipment or retail space and, finally, the number of employees, their qualifications and payment methods;
  3. draw up a marketing plan in which it is necessary to determine which markets or groups of buyers the company will target, how the product should differ from competitors' products so that buyers pay attention to it, at what price this product will be sold, where and how sales will be organized and finally, how it will all be advertised;
  4. prepare calculations and make on their basis a financial business plan, which will assess how much money is needed to start a business, when this money will be needed, from whom and on what terms this money can be tried to get and how profitable it will be to invest in a new business.

For the successful development of the country's economy, it is necessary to protect competition and discourage attempts by individual firms to monopolize the market in order to impose higher prices on customers.

Technically, becoming an entrepreneur is not difficult.

You need an idea, a certain amount of starting capital and a desire to launch your startup.

Because many who ask me questions ask something that at first you shouldn't even bother at all. There are even questions that a person may never face at all. This step could be attributed to development, but I took it out separately. After you have wider warehouses, more powerful equipment and a website, more employees, etc., you need to provide all this with work. This requires aggressive advertising to the maximum. You have to use many advertising opportunities. Look for customers on the Internet, do offline advertising, do direct sales, etc. The more advertising tools you use, the better the result. But be sure to record the results and weed out ineffective advertising tools so as not to waste budgets.

Step 10. Scaling

Your business is working well, making money, you are constantly developing, everything is great! But there are also adjacent directions or neighboring cities. If your business model is successful in your city, then you can make representations in other cities. If there is no desire or opportunity to go to neighboring cities, then you can simply capture an adjacent direction, if any.

This is the hero of our story who decided to start a business from scratch.

Step 1. Determine our value

Take a piece of paper and a pen, then write a list of 10 points, these are the skills that you feel better than others.

He asked his friend Pasha, disguised as a client, to go to these companies and identify their strengths and weaknesses in order to further develop competitive advantages by working for himself.

After commercial intelligence, Pasha named a number of strengths and weaknesses of these companies. Pasha put these sides in a table so that it would be convenient for Vasya to compare them.

Strengths of Vasya's competitors:

  • 8 out of 10 companies try to sell too much of additional products and services at the first meeting with a client. This causes his negative reaction;
  • an interior designer in all 10 companies, at the first conversation with a potential client, conducts a dialogue in a complex professional language using a large number of special terms;
  • 7 out of 10 companies charge extra for making edits to a computer design project.

Taking into account all the above-described advantages and disadvantages of competitors, our hero Vasily decided to design the interiors of houses and apartments in his city at a lower price. Similar companies on the market provide these services at a higher price, since they spent a lot of money on maintaining a workplace and paying taxes for an employee.

The cost of our designer's services was now one and a half times lower with the proper quality of design projects.

This completed the second step of building your business from scratch with Vasily Pupkin.

Step 3. We decide on the positioning of our business and draw up a Unique Selling Proposition (USP)

Meanwhile, the hero of our business history Vasily did not sit idle and developed a personal website for himself, created groups in social networks, notified the environment about the services they provided and sent commercial offers to your potential clients.

Step 6. We start a business, earn the first money and form a brand

After completing all the previous steps, you gradually approached the most interesting stage - the first orders, and therefore the first profits.

As I wrote earlier, I opened my first business at the age of 19 - it was a vending business (payment terminals). Yes, money was needed for this. Then I had a few more projects. All of them had nothing to do with the Internet.

And so, about 3 years ago, my current friend and business partner Vitaly and I opened our own studio for creating websites without a penny. We ourselves learned to make Internet projects literally on the go, but in the end, in a few months we earned about 500,000 rubles at our website development studio.

6. The real story of how my friend Misha worked as a security guard and became a businessman

Here is one of my favorite stories about a real entrepreneur who started a business from scratch. After all, I promised to give examples from life in the article.

Do you want to know how Mikhail became an entrepreneur from a laborer, opened, bought a foreign car and an apartment?

A few years ago, my friend Mikhail worked wherever possible: as a handyman at a construction site, a loader, a security guard.

In a word, he was not engaged in the most monetary and intellectual work. It all started when a friend of mine was guarding a building materials company. One day a client came to them, who wanted to buy a large batch of construction insulation, but it was not in the range.

Misha knew that literally 100 meters from the company he was guarding, there was another hardware store, where there was definitely such a heater. Taking a contact from a potential customer, he went to this store in the evening and agreed that he would bring them a large customer if they give him a percentage of the purchase made from them. The management of this store agreed and Misha worked as a freelance sales manager, earning about 30 000 rubles for just one deal (recommendation).

And that was the amount equal to his monthly salary!

Mikhail thought this was an interesting case, but financial results from the deal gave him confidence. So he quit his job and began by agreeing with various firms that he would sell their goods. Since Misha already worked as a laborer and security guards in a construction company, he also chose construction goods for sale: windows, doors, fittings, roofing, and so on.

My friend just went to the construction sites of the city and offered his goods. Something was bought from him, something not. As a result, Mikhail formed an assortment of the most hot goods and understood how to properly negotiate with foremen at construction sites.

After 2 years, Mikhail opened his own company selling building materials and connected his brother to this business. Prior to that, his brother Kostya worked in "gorgaz" and received the usual small salary. Now the guys are quite successful in sales and make good money.

By the way, I have been to their office more than once and have known Misha for several years. He told me this story himself.

By starting a business from scratch, you avoid the risk of losing money, which is the most important thing. Also, starting without material resources teaches you to make better decisions in order to make money.
