When developing the NX mini Samsung completely discovered new format sensor. An inch matrix (13.2x8.8mm) has not yet been used in any Samsung camera. I was especially pleased with the ability to set the minimum shutter speed in the range from 1/2000 s to 1 s. The camera tends to use slower shutter speeds than higher ISOs, which is not always convenient. However, you can always set these parameters manually. Samsung NX mini offers three settings for aspect ratios - 3: 2, 16: 9 and 1: 1. The maximum frame resolution is 5472x3648.

The camera performance was also a pleasant surprise. Within a second after pressing the power button, the camera is ready for use. In our case, however, time was also spent on extending the lens. The continuous shooting rate is 6 frames per second in full resolution with continuous autofocus. By lowering the resolution to 5 megapixels and turning off autofocus, you can achieve a rate of fire of 30 frames per second. At the same time, performance is severely limited by the shallow buffer. After a dozen JPEG frames, the burst process slows down dramatically. Here Samsung NX mini is definitely inferior to Nikon 1 J4. On the other hand, rate of fire and buffer depth are important to reporters, not to target audience budget mirrorless.

Autofocusing is carried out on a contrast principle of 35 points. We recommend that you keep the AF-assist lamp on to avoid focusing problems in low light conditions. There are no complaints about autofocus speed, but at dusk the camera focuses very uncertainly. The test shots in the next section of the article will show an example of a night city landscape, and in this case the camera focused only on the second or third attempt. As already stated, manual focus implemented using navigation keys. In this case, the focus peaking function is not provided, there is only an increase in a fragment of the frame by five and eight times.

It is natural that such a thin camera received an exclusively electronic shutter, thanks to which the minimum shutter speed is 1/16000 s. However, the electronic shutter has one unpleasant feature in the form of stripes in the image when shooting in artificial lighting conditions at shutter speeds shorter than about 1/200 s. The same situation was observed in the Panasonic Lumix GM1.

Image stabilization "fell on the shoulders" of the lens. Of the three available NX-M mount lenses, only the bundled zoom has a built-in stabilizer. We must pay tribute to him in this regard, given his ultra-small dimensions.

Samsung NX mini is the first time in our memory when the camera is not only equipped with a built-in flash, but also equipped with an additional, more powerful flash. The optional flash, however, is not much more powerful than the built-in one. Its guide number is 7 m at ISO 160. An external stereo microphone can be installed in the same connector. Note also that both the built-in and external flashes can fire on the front and rear curtains, which is usually unusual for cameras of this level.

The camera does not shine with additional modes and it is generally assumed that most of the time you will be shooting in automatic mode... In this mode, it is possible to shoot only in JPEG format without any intervention in the exposure settings. Half of the time we used the camera in this mode and, admittedly, it turned out to be quite working. Samsung NX mini can shoot panoramas and stitch HDR images, but multiple exposures and time-lapse photography are not provided. In Smart mode, various shooting scenes and retouching tools are available, artistic filters are only available through the main menu.

If the NX mini is strong in its wireless capabilities. It belongs to the Smart Camera 3.0 series, like the older NX30 mirrorless camera. This means that the set of possibilities is the same here. In addition, the camera is equipped with an NFC sensor for fast communication with mobile devices and one-touch transfer of images. We are finally convinced that Samsung is the leader today in terms of wireless capabilities.

To use the wireless arsenal, you need to install the free Samsung Smart Camera App, which supports Android and iOS. The camera can be controlled remotely, and the screen of a smartphone or tablet acts as a viewfinder. The application also allows you to copy pictures from the camera, and in the menu of the camera itself there is a function of sending content to multiple devices at once. The camera can also communicate via a wireless router with a home network and transfer images directly to a PC. The function of sending pictures by e-mail and to social networks, including Vkontakte and Odnoklassniki, as well as the Samsung Link cloud service.

We tried the baby monitor mode on Samsung NX30, and now we played babysitter again. This mode allows you to remotely turn on the camera as needed and watch the baby on the smartphone display. Samsung NX mini is the thinnest interchangeable lens camera. Why are there "mirrorless", many ultra-compacts are thicker than our today's experimental. In addition, it has a rotary display, in addition, a touchscreen. In addition, there are Wi-Fi and NFC modules with traditionally wide capabilities. And on top of that - a battery of impressive capacity with an impressive claimed battery life - 650 frames when tested according to the CIPA standard. This is about twice as much as that of direct and not quite direct competitors, and the largest gap is observed precisely from the main competitor - Nikon 1 S2.

Actually, the camera has many competitors. In addition to the Nikon 1 S2, there are also similarly priced Olympus E-PM2 and Panasonic DMC-GF5, which are equipped with a slightly larger Micro Four Thirds sensor (crop factor 2 versus 2.7 for the hero of the material). Also, one cannot fail to note the compact Sony DSC-RX100 (2nd and 3rd generation), which has the same sensor, and the lens has an impressive zoom ratio and is also quite fast, although the price of a station wagon from Sony is higher. We must not forget about indirect, but still competitors in Samsung's own ranks. As already noted, the camera body is extremely thin - the closest competitors lose about 6-10 mm. In fact, the thickness of the "mirrorless" is commensurate with most ultra-compacts. However, despite the small thickness, the case is quite sturdy and does not give in at all when trying to twist and squeeze, and also does not emit the slightest sound - and this is in the presence of a rotary display. This gives the impression that the case is made of metal - but no, it is plastic.

The material of the front panel visually resembles leather, but in fact it is not leather, not leatherette or even rubber with a leather pattern, but just plastic. Moreover, even on the back, the pad is a plastic imitation of rubber. In general, the manufacturer decided to save money. However, it should be noted that the weight of the NX mini body and the supplied lens is so small that it is relatively convenient to hold it like that. Although it was not without "expensive" materials at all - the overlay in the upper part, thanks to which the design of the camera is greatly revived, is molded from aluminum alloy... There are many color options - white, black, brown, blue and pink.

In front, in addition to the lens mount, there is an autofocus illumination LED, as well as a built-in flash window.

WITH back side most of the surface is occupied by the display. On the right side there are almost all controls: video recording keys, entering the main menu, calling up the menu for changing the operating mode, switching to the viewing mode, deleting, as well as four multifunctional buttons combined into a schematic ring and supplemented by the enter key in the center. In the upper right corner of the back side there is a system speaker and a holder for the supplied belt.

Above are the shutter button, the power button and the programmable Direct Link button (setting the wireless data transfer function), a microphone slot, and an external flash connector.
